D*c*mb«r 23, 19M KMHS Wrestlers Defeat Shelby For 2-0 SWC Mark Kings Mountain High’s wrestlers fought off a late Shelby Irally to win their second straight Southwestern 3-A Conference match Thursday night at the KMHS gym, 31-21. The Mountaineers, defending conference and Sectional cham pions go into the Christmas break with a 2-0 record and a share of first place the SWC with East Gaston. Coach Steve Moffitt’s grap- plers resume action on January 5 at home against South Point. They host Bums on January 8. The Mountaineers trailed dur ing the early stages of Thursday’s match, due mainly to a forfeit in the 119-pound weight class, but came on strong during the middleweight matches to build a 26-11 lead going into the last three matches. Shelby, which needed a vic tory in ^ three of the final mat ches to win, closed the gap to 26-21 on a major decision by Tim Clark over KM’s Jim Barr inger in the 18S-pound match and a pin by Pat Lutz against KM’s Tom Potter in the 19S-pound match. The match came down to the final bout between heavyweights Keith Pressley of the Moun taineers and Richard Canipe of the Lions, and near the close of the third period between the two, Pressley won on a pin to widen the final margin to 11 points. Patriots Win 3rd Straight Kings Mountain Junior High’s wrestlers closed out their pre-Christmas schedule Wednes day at Bums with a 60-12 vic tory. The win gives the Patriots a perfect 3-0 record and left them in a tie with Shelby for first place in the Western Junior High Athletic Association. The Patriots won nine of the 13 matches on pins and wrsq^d up the vic®*y in. fine style "by winning the last seven matches. Mike Smith, KM’s 132-pounder, continued his three-year unbeaten string with a pin over Bums’ Tom Hartman. “Bums had a really good team,” commented KM Coach Phil Weathers. “They were a real scrappy team and they made us work for everything that we got. TheyVe always given us a lot of trouble.” The Patriots got off to a fast start with Kenneth Smith, Charles McClain and Dwayne Brooks winning the first three matches on pins. The Pats lost two of the next three matches before taking the final seven, in cluding six on pins. “Our heavyweights continued to do a superb job,” Weathers said. “Randy Whitaker, Jody Sellers and Doug Sipe all wrestl ed fine matches.” The Patriots will use the Christmas Holidays to brush up on some of their mistakes and get ready for a rugged January schedule which sends them up against arch rival Shelby and several strong non-conference teams. Kings Mountain resumes ac tion on Wed., Jan. 7 at East McDowell, and the Patriots close out their conference schedule on Jan. 14 at Shelby.
