Cancer Society Essay
Kings Mountain Senior High
copped two of the three awards
presented by the Cleveland
County Chapter of the
American Cancer Society in the
recent Great American Smoke
Out essay contest.
Janice Scoggins, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Scoggins, won
the first place award and
Stephen Lee, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Joe Lee, won the third place
award. The second place award
went to Crest High School stu
dent Melany Brown.

MRS. GENEVA RIPPY
Funeral services for Mrs.
Geneva Ham Rippy, 79, of 108
N. Dilling St., who died Wednes
day in Cleveland Memorial
Hospital, were conducted Satur
day morning at 11 o’clock from
St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church
of which she was a member.
Rev. Harwood T. Smith,
assisted by Rev. Gerald Weeks,
officiated, and interment was in
Mountain Rest Cemetery.
Mrs. Rippy was the daughter
of the late William Ratchford
and Katherine Elizabeth Martin
Ham. Her husband was the late
Vester Conrad Rippy.
Surviving are four daughters,
Mrs. Nathan Davis, Mrs. Gene
Gladden and Mrs. Peggy
Rowell, all of Kings Mountain
and Mrs. David Hambright of
York, S.C.; two brothers, For
rest Ham of Blacksburg, S.C.
and John Ham of Smyrna, S.C.;
two sisters, Mrs. Annie Jones of
Kings Mountain and Mfs.
Katherine Simon of Black Ca
nyon City, Ariz.; 18 grand
children and 18 great
grandchildren.
Masters Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

HUFFSTETLER
Funeral services for Mrs.
Mary Ross Huffstetler, 87, of
Route II, were conducted Sun
day afternoon at 2 p.m. from
Resurrection Lutheran Church
of which she was a member.
Rev. Gerald Weeks officiated
at the rites and interment was in
Mountain Rest Cemetery.
Mrs. Huffstetler died Friday
morning in the Kings Mountain
Hospital after several years il
lness. %e was daughter of the
late John Wesley and Margaret
Hallman Ross and widow of
Thoams Edgar Huffstetler.
Surviving are five sons, Gus
Huffstetler, Roy Huffstetler and
Clyde Huffstetler, all of Kings
Mountain, Thomas Hufrstetler
of Gastonia and Warren Huff
stetler of Bessemer City; three
daughten, Mrs. Louise Hufr-
stetler, Mrs. Gaddis (Selma)
Owens and Mrs. Boyce
(Virginia) Eaker, all of Kings
Mountain; one brother. Will
Ross of Cherryville; one sister,
Mrs. Marshall (Virgie) Craig of
Cherryville; IS grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for William
Melvin Land, Sr., 63, of Route
2, Bessemer City, who died Sun
day in Gaston Memorial
Hospital, were conducted Tues
day at 2 p.m. from Kings Moun
tain Baptist Church by Rev. J.C.
Goare, interment following in
Gaston Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Land died Sunday in
Gaston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Pickens
County, S.C., son of Mrs. Lillie
Roper Land of Dallas and the
late R.P. Land.
Surviving, in addition to his
mother, are his wife, Mrs. Helen
Lewis Land; a son, Melvin Land,
Jr. of Bessemer City; two
daughters, Mrs. Shelby Groen-
dal of Sdem, S.C. and Mrs.
Marlene Rankin of Walhalla,
S.C., two stepdaughters, Mrs.
Sandra Paine of Matthews and
Mrs. Mary Gerald Badger of
Tucson, Arizona; two brothers,
Robert Land of Dallas and Carl
Lee Land of Spartanburg, S.C.
The contest was conducted in
all high schools of the county
where representatives of the
American Cancer Society asked
English teachers to invite stu
dent participation in a SOO-word
essay. First prize is a $2S savings
certificate from Shelby’s First
Union National Bank, second
prize is a SIS savings certificate
from Northwestern Bank at
Shelby and third place is $10
from First Citizens Bank and
Trust Co. of Kings Mountain.
Mrs. Ben T. Goforth, English
sponsor at kMSHS, said that 21
local students participated in the
contest and 35 signed a pledge
not to smoke on Nov. 20th, date
of the Great American Smoke
Out.
Jimmy Hines of Shelby, pro
ject chairman, made the awards
presentation at KMSHS Friday
morning as students prepared to
leave school for a Christmas
vacation.
‘This is really a surprise
Christmas present”, said Miss
Scoggins.

R. and Laura Lee Hart of
Winter Haven, Fla., died Sun
day at his home.
Survivors include his grand
parents, Theodore R. and Katie
Hart of Grover.
