Kings Mountain’s Moun
taineers sent 1980 out with a
bang Friday night at East
Rutherford, defeating the
Cavaliers 100-48 for their eighth
straight victory.
The win left the Mountaineers
6-0 in the Southwestern 3-A
Conference and tied with defen
ding champion R-S Central for
first place. Those two teams
meet for the first time this season
on January 6 at the KMHS gym.
The Kings Mountain girls saw
East Rutherford come from
behind in the final minute to
take a 4S-44 win in the opener.
The loss dropped the Moun-
tainettes to 3-3 in the SWC and
4- 4 overall.
Carl Smith, Kings Mountain’s
5- 10 point guard, had his best
game of the year with 26 points
to lead six double-digit scorers
for the Mountaineers. Terrence
Black added 15 points, Paul In
gram 14, Demetrius Goode 13,
and Todd Wray and Gerald
Byers 12 apiece.
The Cavaliers, who fell to 24
in league play after winning their
first two games, stayed with the
Mountaineers for one quarter.
The game was knotted at 11-all
going into the second period.
But Smith and the Mounties
got their fast break going in the

team in scoring, is ranked third
in the state with a 21.2 scoring
average after five games. The 5-6
starting guard has led the Battl

young season.
“Priscilla has shown so much
improvement, both confidence-
wise and physically,’’ says
Wesleyan Coach Laura Ferrell
when she speaks of her
sophomore guard. Ferrell coach
ed Rickenbacker last year when
they were both at Methodist
College. “Priscilla has the con
fidence and maturity on the
floor that she didn’t have as a
freshman. She exhibits true
leadership for our team
whenever she is in the game.
And, she is so much stronger
now. All the hard hours she put
in in conditioning during pre
season has definitely paid off,"
Ferrell continues.
And, while attainging the
number three spot in scoring
average, Rickenbacker did not
sacrifice accuracy. The Grover
resident is seventh in the state in
that category, sporting a 51i^o
accuracy mark from the floor.
She has made good on 46 out of
90 shots.
Rickenbacker is the grand
daughter of Rev. Herbert Mc
Clain of Grover.
