TuMday. lanuary 6. 1981-UNGS MOUNTAIN HERALO-Pag* 3 Mounties Host R-S In ‘The Game’ Tonight Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers will try to snap the longest winning streak in North Carolina prep basketball tonight when they host R-S Central in the biggest game of the year thus br in Southwestern 3-A Oxi- ference action. The Hilltoppers, defending state i-A champions, have a 43-gaiiie winning str«ik which includes a 32-0 record and the state title last year and an 11-0 mark so far this year. The Mountaineers, 9-1 overall, are 6-0 in the Southwestern 3-A Conference, same as the Hilltoppers, so tonight’s game could go a long way in determining the 1980-01 SWC championship. R-S, led Chris Michaels, will hold a big height advantage but the Mountaineers hope to offset that by using their quickness and speed. R-S b fresh from winning the Freedom High Holiday Tourna ment in Morganton while the Mountaineers are coming off a third place finish in the annual aeveUnd County Tipoff Tour nament. The Mounties lost a first round game to Bums Friday night. 63-61, but bounced back in Saturday’s consolation game to edge arch rival Shelby S7-SS. The Mountaineers’ biggest disadvantage against Bums was a lack of rebounding strength. With their biggest player. 6-4 Gerald Byers, on the bench much of the game with foul trou ble. the Mounties couldn’t match up on the boards with the taller Bums team. Byers, whose rebounding key^ a 22-point victory for the Mounties over Bums earlier in the year, managed only two points and two rebounds. Bums Junior High Resumes Play The Patriot wrestlers, unbeaten after three starts, resume Western Junior High Athletic Association action Wednesday at East McDowell. Coach Phil Weathers' men have never lost a conference match. The Patriot basketball teams resume play Thursday against The two jayee teams travel to Bums for a 4 pjn. twinbill and the varsity team will host Bums here at the same time. The jayvee boys are unbeaten after five starts, but the jayvee giris, and varsity boys and girb teams are all seeking their first Western Conference win. Demetrius Goode led the KM rebounding with eight and Terrence Blalock had six. The game was close throughout and was tied at 47-all going into the fourth quarter. Kings Mountain went into its four-comers offense early in the fourth quarter and took a brief lead, but Bums got a three-point play from Doug Simmons with five minutes left to take the lead for good. 52-51. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 62-53 with 47 seconds left, but the Mounties made a last ditch effort to win and cut the difference to 62-59 with 11 seconds left on a basket by Carl Smith. Smith topped the KM effort with 21 points and Blalock add ed 16. Simmons had 18 and Ed ward Hopper 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Blalock hit a jumper with two seconds to play Saturday night to give the Mounties their 57-55 victory over Shelby in the battle for third place. Kings Mountain led 51-45 go ing into the fourth quarter but saw the Lions come storming back to tie the game at 55-all and set the stage for Blalock’s last- second heroics. Byers led the Mountaineers in scoring with 22 points, Blalock added 11 and Goode 10. David Tiddy and Kevin Willis led the Lions with 13 apiece. Brenda Cannon scored 11 Saturday to lead Shelby to its se cond win of the year over the KM five. Williams led all scorers with 13 points and Goode had II. The winner of tonight's gome will take over sole possession of first place in the Southwestern 3-A Conference. R-S brings o 11-0 season's record ond 43-0 mark over the last two years to the KMHS gym.
