IRA DIXON Funeral services for Mrs. Mat- tie Lee Blackburn Dixon, 84, of Route 2, who died Friday morn ing in Kings Mountain Hospital after several year’s illness, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. from Bethlehem Baptist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Sam Murphy officiated at the rites, and interment was in Bethlehem Church Cemetery. She was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Blackburn. Surviving are her husband, Ira Dixon; six sons. Nelson Dixon, Marion Dixon, Sidney Roy Dix on and Gene Dixon, all of Kings Mountain, Frank Dixon of McSwain Tours With G-W Group BOILING SPRINGS - The Gardner-Webb College Choral Ensemble conducted its annual Spring Tour, March 6-12. The Ensemble performed in churches and schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. William T. McSwain Jr,, son of Margaret B. McSwain of Kings Mountain, is a member of the Gardner-Webb Choral Ensemble. He is a freshman. The Choral Ensemble, is the official touring choir of the col lege. The Spring tour coincided with “Music in Our Schools Week” sponsored by the Music Educators National Conference and was an emphasis on a na tionwide basis in the promotion of music as an educational tool in the schools in the country. Accompanists for the Choral Ensemble were Connie Hodge, organist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Hodge of Sumter, S.C. and Patricia Burnett, pianist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paleather Burnett of Dun can, S.C. Student conductor was Larry Bodie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Bodie of Aiken, S.C. He is a junior majoring in Sacred Music. Currently in his seventh year as conductor of the Choral Ensemble, Dr. George R. Cribb is Chairman of the Deptartment of Fine Arts. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and graduate degrees in music from Columbia University and North Texas State University. He has done additional studies at Westminster Choir College, the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford, the Union Theological Seminary (New York)and at York Univer sity (England). Flower Class Is Scheduled The Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a beginners Flower Arranging Class in the Neighborhood Facility Center, located at 208 North Cleveland Avenue. Sponsored by Cleveland Tech, this 11 week Monday evening class will begin as soon as enough students pre- register. Adults 18 years of age and older, interested in enrolling, should call the Neighborhood Center at 739-3549 any weekday after 2 p.m. Once enough students are secured, a nominal $5 registra tion fee will be requested. Adults age 65 and older are free. District Workshop Sunday American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155 will sponsor a District Leadership workshop Sunday from 1:30 until 5 p.m. at Post 155 and again on Sunday, March 29, from 1:30 until 5 p.m., according to announce ment by Mrs. Ruth Gamble, District President. All area Auxiliary members are encouraged to attend the leadership course which will be led by Mrs. Howard Stutts of Newton, slate chairman of leadership development. District 23 includes Kings Mountain, Shelby, Forest City, Spindale and Rutherfordton. All other interested Auxiliary members are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Grover and Dr. Harley Dixon of Puducah, Ky.; three daughters, Mrs. Frances Dotson of Shelby, Mrs. Marshall (Sarah Fay) Ruppe of Gaffney, S.C., Mrs. Boyce (Helen) Wells of Kings Mountain; one sister, Mrs. Clyde (Annie Bell) Blalock of Shelby; 28 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren. MRS. lASPER PUTNAM Funeral services for Mrs. Jasper Putnam, 71, of Route 3, who died Tuesday in Kings Mountain Hospital after extend ed illness, were conducted Thursday afternoon from Mary’s Grove United Methodist Church, interment following in the church cemetery. Mrs. Putnam was a native of Cleveland County, daughter of the late Phillip Pinkney and Laura Emma Sellers Beattie. She was a member of Mary’s Grove Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Jasper Rufus Putnam; a son, Paul R. Putnam of Kings Moun tain; two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Black of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Bill Costner of Shelby; a brother, Lester Beattie of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Mrs. John F. Carpenter and Mrs. Fred Ware, both of Kings Mountain; and nine grand children. Carpenter’s Funeral Home of Cherryville was in charge of ar rangements.
