KM Students Raise
$1850 For Cancer Fund
From Page 1-A
decided on the chain link sale,
which gave students and
teachers the opportunity to pur
chase one link of the construc
tion paper-made chain for a
10-cent donation to the Cancer
Society.
“We made 800 links, and
thought that would be all we’d
need,” they recalled. “As it turn
ed out, we made well over
100,000.”
The FCA, whose advisor is
teacher Steve Baker, did not set a
goal. “Mr. Baker told everyone
to let their hearts set the goal,”
said Janet. ‘To be honest, we
thought if we raised $200 it
would be good.”
Kay Holshouser of the Coun
ty Unit came to the school on
Monday of last week to kickoff
the drive. She showed the film
“John Baker's Last Race”, about
a coach who dies of cancer, and
it inspired the students.
For .the remainder of the
week, Danna and Janet spent
most of their time after school-
and all of their spare time during
school-making links and coun
ting money. There were contests
among the classrooms, with the
winners getting a free meal at
McDonald’s and the winning
room receiving a plaque on
Awards Day.

The coordinators feel the suc
cess was due to the “personal ex
perience” students have had
with cancer. “A lot of students,”
Janet pointed out, “have ex
perienced cancer in their family
and we have a lot of students
here at school who have it.”
Janet recently lost her mother
to the disease.
“The response was
unbelievable,” said Danna. “We
never thought we’d get this
much.”
While many of the students
made chain links and counted
donations from that project,
many boys wearing bermuda
shorts walked the halls and let
students admire their pretty legs
for a donation.
Students helping coordinate
the project were Lee Ann
Lineberger, Sandy Appling,
Alison Champion, Terri Plonk,
Laura Herndon, Dena Lovelace,
Dena Chapman, Terry Odoms,
