Boulware point or order QUESTION: What is the purpose of raising a point of order at a club meeting?—-A Reader. ANSWER: In the business proce dure of a club meeting, errors will creep in. One of the ways to call attention to such errors is to raise “a point of order.” Suppose for a moment that the chairman has put before the house a question that did not get a second, and yet it was being discussed One of the mem bers, might recognize this error and say: ‘‘Mr. Chairman, I rise to a point of order." The chairman will say: ‘‘State your point.” The member might j, i.y ••Mr Chairman, the motion did not ■. a second." The presiding officer sensing the error should say, "Your point is well-taken - do 1 hear a second lo the motion?” As soon a» the motion is seconded, the chair wiii re state the motion before the as sembly and then call for dis cussion on it. No vote is necessary on the mo tion ‘‘Point of Order," and hence the chairman usually says, "Your point is well taken,” or "Your point is not well taken.” READERS: The write of this column will write Mr ier s Day speeches upon request.
