While exam ining a rather wide selction of nur sery stock, I ran across some peach, apple and pear trees which looked suspicious to me. Upon closer ex amination my suspicion was sus tained. These trees were, tn the first place, too old to be transplanted with much assurance of survival. They had grown tw-o or more years in the nursery row, making the shock of transplanting unnecessar ily great to the root system. And secondly, the selection of scaffold, or framework, branches would have been impossible because of crooked main trunks and sharp an gles of the few scaffold branches that had formed. While 1 was looking a clerk came up with the usual, "May I help yna Sir?" J told him "No thanks,* but T would like to make a suggestion to him. "Yes, Sir,” he said. Then I explained to him the condition of some of the fruit trees and told him how ssimelsed 1 was to see his stamp of a unroyal tagged to each tree. We chatted awhile. I YOl T ARE THE DETECTIVE Robert. Reardon wealthy lawyer, lies slumped over the desk to ; his home study, dead As you approach the desk, you note the articles resting on its polished mahogany surface—a whisky decanter, an empty glass, a bowl of half-melted Ice cubes, an uncapped bottle of .soda water, and some legal-looking documents weighted down by a gun. The typewriter on the tabe in back of the dead man holds a sheet of paper and as you bend over this, you read the -imple and concise message; “I'm sorry. This is the only solution to everything.” After noting that the French doors on one side of the room are wide open, you turn and question the nervous-looking butler, who ad mitted you to the house. j "I brought Mr. Reardon a bowl of Ice cubes at about 5.30 this evening. He seemed to be very worried about something, and I heard him lock the door behind me as I left the study. Then, about a half hour later, I heard the shot and rushed back. I couldn't open the door and so I hurried back to the kitchen where we keep some master keys. ’Vthen 1 returned and unlocked the door, I found him like this |. . . dead!” As you gaze down reflectively at the bullet wound in Reardon’s | right temple, you hear sounds out In the hall and hurrying out there, : you find Mrs Reardon has just entered the house. You quickly Identify yourself and then, as tactfully and kindly as you can, you tell her that her husband vs dead. “Bob . . . dead?’’ she gasps. “Oh, no—who could have shot Mm? Oh, It's too horrible! But he surely must have been afraid of something . . . locking himself away in his room a* he did.” And she breaks into convulsive sobs. After she has quieted down somewhat, you ask, “Have you been away all evening?” “Oh, yes. I left immediately after dinner this evening to attend a movie. Os, if only I hadn't gone ... I shouldn’t have left Bob alone. But ..." “I don’t think you did leave him alone all evening,” you interject. “I'm afraid we ll have to take you in for further questioning.” What has aroused your suspicions regarding Mrs. Reardon? SOLUTION Before you were able to tell Mrs. Reardon of the manner of her husband's death, she blurted out. “Who could have shot, him?” And, although she claimed that she had been away from the hot use all evening, she knew that his study door was locked. You suspect that she re-entered the house through the open French doors, shot her husband, and faked the suicide message in the typewrites. Her ques tion, "Who could nave shot him,” was an obvious slip. SEE THE ’6l RAMBLER CLASSIC 6 And V-8 The All Purpose Compact North Carolina’s Newest Rambler Dealer j Weaver Bros. Rambler 214 W.
