The former "rock and roll" singer told his audience, "I have exchanged my "rock and roll” for the "Rock of Ages.” He was more impressive as a man of God than at any time in his career as a dia mond-studded, fantastically gowned "rock and roll”. Idol. He came out of the pulpit to min gle intimately with his audience, and as he prayed and sang, the con verts came flocking. Joe Lutcher’s converted sax and inspiring mes sages brought forth responsive ringing and praying He, Lutcher, is not only a fine musician, but a wonderful person and a forcible speaker. He, too gave up a flourishing career to work in the church. These two form an unbeatable combination. If you haven’t seen “Lil” Richard, the evangelist and Joe Lutchcer and his “converted sax”, then you'v emissed the big gest treat of your life. , PEARL BAILEY, MASTER OF COMEDY IN SHRINE APPEARANCE Pearl Bailey kept her audience chuckling through most of her fast moving and well-presented show last week at the Shrine Audito rium in Los Angeles. Her songs, both new and old were roundly applauded by the delighted audi ence. Supported by her drummer hus band, Lou Bellson. and a group of singers dancers and jugglers, she was just as terrific. There is one thing sure about Miss Bailey—her popularity will last for a long, long time. “CLEOPATRA” SHOOTING DELAYED: LIZ TAYLOR ILL Although Lloyds of London, insurers of the ?oth Century Fox picture, “Cleopatra”, have suggested that Marilyn Monroe replace Elisabeth Taylor, stu dio officials insist on Miss Tay lor. Her illness, diagnosed as severe pneumonia, caused quite an alanq at the studio. Miss Taylor's condition has Improv ed, according to recent report*. PETER LAWFORD ILL IN PALM SPRINGS Actor Peter Law ford, brother-in law of President Kennedy, suffer ed a severe naval hemorrhage while visiting with Frank Sinatra in Palm Springs last week, and was rushed to the hospital there for treatment. He was stricken prior to a visit to Joseph P. Kennedy, chief of the Kennedy clan. FOLK SINGER ODETTA STEALS SCENES Odetta. famous folk-singer who co-stars in "Sanctuary”. 20th Cen tury film of the "Roaring Twen ties”, is headed for a tremendously successful career as a great dra matic act re-ws Lee Rensick Al though stars Yves Montand and Bradford Dili man were superb, Odetta definitely stole many scenes with her well-modulated voice and her calm, yet deeply emotional per formances. She will do for heavy drama what Hattie McDaniel did for comedy. She has a great future. Johnny Mathis Fired By Night Club For Walking Out During His Show SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico <ANP> Smooth-singing Johnny Mathis struck a somewhat discordant note with officials of Puerto Rrico’s big gest nightclub last week when he walked off in the middle of his $15,000-a-week act because a heck loir in the packed audience had made an insulting remark. Pearl Bailey Credited With Eleanor Powell’s Comeback CHICAGO (ANP) Pearl Bai- , ley's modesty may not permit her | to admit this openly, but she was j the guiding spirit behind the sue- i cessful comeback of former movie j starlet-dancer Eleanor Powell. Miss Powell (formerly the wife of actor Glen Ford', at the peak ! of her career one of Hollywood's j leading tap dancers, had retired j from the stage and settled down to j the calmer career of housewife 1 some 11 years ago. She remained ! off stage until two years ago when i she ran into Miss Bailey at the ! “A Raisin in The Sun” Still Popular in Leading US Cities CHICAGO (API Despite some "panning" on the westcoast, partic ularly Los Angeles, "A Raisin in the Sun”, the prize-winning Broad way play by Chicago playwright Lorraine Hansberry, continues to receive favorable reviews in such leading cities of the nation as New York and Chicago. The play currently is making its second stand al the Black stone Theatre in Chicago and THE WEEK IN RECORDS BY ALBERT ANDERSON FOR ANT JACKIE WILSON'S IT TOPS REVIEW Three big album releases are features in this week's review, with an entry to rock ‘n’ roll sing er Jackie Wilson, topping the fare. The I.Ps are Wilson’s "You Ain’t Heard Nothin’ Yet", “The Revela tion" by the Roosevelt Warden's trio and "The Resurgence of Dext er Gordon." There is no attempt here to ex ploit the Wilson situation (Jackie) as most everyone knows, is recup erating from a recent accidental shooting), but this reviewer readi ly admits that the spotlighting of thi* his most recent disc represents an effort to be tacitly objective. There is the belief, you we, that while Jackie recovers, his thou sands of fans should avail them selves of the opportunity this LP provides to refresh themselves with his vibrant singing The other l.Ps speak plainly for themselves, Hera in the complete faro: •TfCKT AWT HEARD NO TH! Jackie says in a special note to his fans on the back of the jacket of the album that the recording “was made by him as a tribute to the late A1 Jo!son, whom he considers “toe greatest enter tainer of this or any other era, . And a tribute it is, for Wilson has done Jolson's songs proud, putting much of the familiar fire of A1 into the singing, although doing so in Jackie’s own ecintalliztng manner. The critics here, also, have been generous in their praises of the play, which portrays a Negro family’s strug gle to escape the ghetto of a blighted area of Chicago’s south«ide. The widowed matriarch of the family in the play is Claudia Me- Neil, who does an outstanding job of acting. She has been with the play from the beginning Playing ritage of A>l Jolson alive, . . 'while at the same time proving how well a talented artist can project an en tirely different smging style and material into his own format, with great success.
