March Broadcast Os College Choirs Listed NEW YORK, N. Y. March 2- Two Tennessee Colleges pre sented a program of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, the great ißth century German com poser, on March 6 broadcast of ABC’s "Negro College Choirs” series. The choirs of Lane Col lege in Jackson, and Fisk Uni versity in Nashville, both mem ber institutions of the United Negro College Fund, participat ed in the program. Three other UNCF choral groups will be heard during the month. The choir of Morehouse Col lege in Atlanta, Georgia, will be broadcast during the week of March 13. Wendell Whalen Veteran Officer Gets Top Police Post In N. Y. City NEW YORK (NPI) - Close on the heels of the charge by New York State Sen. Basil A. Patterson that city police have delayed the appointment of Ne groes to positions of rank came the announcement that a veteran of 25 years’ service, Lloyd C. Sealy, native New Yorker, had been elevated to the post of deputy Inspector. Patterson had charged that only five or six -- or 1,500 among 27,000— per cent of the department’s ranking posts were manned by Negro officers. Sealy, 49, who joined the de partment In 1940 as a patrol man in the Bedford-Stuyvesant- Brooklyn area, chalked up hls first distinction when he be came the first Negro to com mand a Harlem precinct sta tion just after the 1964 Harlem riots. Mrs, Louise G. Streat, chair man of the committee planning the observance, said that this year’s institute will be built a round seminars in which women who have achieved in outstand ing careers will serve as dis cussants. An added feature this year will be a workshop for parents at which they will be brought up-to-date or. the many new employment opportunities now open to their daughters after graduation. Livingstone Given Loan Os 563G's SALISBURY Livingstone College has been granted a loan of $563,000 for construc tion of a new' science building, additions to the Carnegie Li brary and the Trent Gymnas ium, and to build a new social science-communications build ing by the U,S, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, according to an announcement made Tuesday in Washington, D, C. Total cost for the project will he 1,363,245, according to Dr. $. E. Duncan, president of the church-related college. Local' architect Robert Stone is now completing plans for the buildings, Dr. Duncan said, and construction should begin within four months. It is ex pected that soma of the build ings will be cmpleted within 12 months after bids are let. This work, the college presi dent said, is part of the second half of the 10 - year, $6,000,000 Development Program upon which the college embarked in 1960, and which is scheduled to toe completed during the 1989- 70 school year, Total cost of the second phase of the special development program is ex pected to cost $3,500,000 and will include two dormitories which will enable the student enrollment to increase to 1,000. is the choir’s director. He is studying general educa tion courses and vocational and technical skills which are In de mand in the job market. It is expected that the average training period of a Job Corps student will be one year. Students Attend MY Urban Confab GREENSBORO A group of students at A&T College last week, in New York City, joined with other students from 75 leading colleges and uni versities in the study of problems of the inter-city. Members of the class in Ur ban Sociology at A&T attended the annual Intercollegiate Ur ban Affairs Conference at Long Island University, held March 4-6, The conference, keynoted by John V. Lindsay, mayor of New York City, featured twenty specialized workshops, chaired by prominent urban planners from throughout the United States and abroad.
