SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, IM7 DuPont /f/lakes Grants Os Over $61,000 To Negro Colleges WILMINGTON, Del. - The Du Pont Company’s program of aid to education for 19C7 lists grants of more than $61,000 to 13 pre dominantly Negro colleges. In addition, the company is grant ing a total of $53,000 to two educational institutions and one technical society to conduct programs In the field of inter racial education. Awards to predominantly Ne gro colleges include a capital grant of $15,000 to Dillard Uni versity, New Orleans, toward new wings on the science build ing. Grants of $5,000 eacii to ad vance and strengthen teaching in scientific and related fields were awarded to Bishop Col lege, Dallas, Tex.; Dillard Uni versity; Fisk University, Nash ville, Tenn.; Hampton Institute, Hamp* >n, Va.; Knoxville Col lege, Knoxville, Ten < and Le- Moyne College, Memphis, Tenn. One half of each of the above grants is for chemistry and the other half for subject which contribute importantly to.edu cation of scientists and engi neers. The funds are to be used by the institution in ways they feel will most effectively advance their instruction In these subjects. A grant of $2,500 for strengh ening the teaching of under graduate engineers was award ed to Tuskegee Institute, Tus~ kegee, Ala. A grant of $3,000 to support a postgraduate teach ing assistant in the field of chemistry was awardedto How ard University, Washington, D. C. Summei research grants of GARDEN TIME BY M. E. GAFDNER N. C. STATE UNIVERSITY The last two columns have been devoted to the All-Ameri ca flower and vegetable selec tions for 1967. It might be well to remind you again about the flower selection for 1966 and 1965 as these winners are still new and the most outstanding of their kinds. 1960 WINNERS Cosmos, “Sunset,” Golden Medal winner, the only red annual Klondyke cosnios. Sun set is an all-season bloomer, finally reaching three feet tall. Excellent for cutting and bor der display. It has airy fern like foliage and easiest to grow , needing to transplanting. Snapdragon, EL hybrid, “Bright Butterflies.” Formula color mixture of these beauti ful new tall, summer blooming, open faced snapdragons. All snapdragon colors, about 10 spikes of flower per plant and two and one-half to three feet tall. Really beautiful. Pansy, FL hybrids, “Giant Majestic” Mixed. Formula col or mixture of these huge pan sies with large blotches, with out equal. Pansy, FL hybrid Giant Ma jestic, “White with Blotch.” Largest, early, heat resisting, all season blooming, most spec tacular pansy to date. Sweet William, “Red Mon arch.” The only solid red an nual blooming sweet William, for bedding and cutting. SPEEDY BROCCOLI SAUCE (Makes 4 to 6 servings) 2 packages (10 ounces IVi cups (lOVi'Ounce can) each) frozen broccoli cream of chicken soup spears* i/ 2 cup (2 ounces) grated, 1 tablespoon flour sharp Cheddar cheese 2/ 3 cup (small can) undiluted 1 tablespoon sesame seeds Carnation Evaporated Milk 1 teaspoon paprika Prepare broccoli according to label directions. Combine flour, Carnation and soup in a medium saucepan. Heat just to boiling over medium heat, stirring constantly. Stir in cheese and sesame seeds. Heat until cheese melts and mix ture thickens slightly, stirring constantly. Arrange broccoli spears on a serving platter or in a dish. Cover with sauce. Garnish with paprika, if desired. Serve immediately. •May also use fresh broccoli, fresh or frozen asparagus or cauliflower. $2,200 each for teachers in the fields of chemistry, or chemi cal engineering, or mechani cal engineering were made to North Carolina A&T, Greens boro; Delaware State College, Dover, Del.; Morgan State Col lege, Baltimore, Md.j North Carolina College, Durham, and Virginia State College, Peters burg, Va. In the field of interracial ed ucation, the company gave $28,- 000 to the University of Dela ware for its Pre-college Op portunity Prog ram -a program started last year to prepare high school students from cul turally deprived backgrounds in northern Delawaie to enter colleges or universities. Du Pont had previously made grants totaling $58,000 to draw up the Delaware plan and get It started. It was subsequent ly supported by additional Fed eral grants. Last summer the university conductedasuccess ful program for 54 boys who had finished their junior year of high school. Du Pont is also continuing its support of a program for interracial education at Antioch College. In 1967 the company will give $20,000 to Antioch to establish two science op portunity scholarships. A grant of $5,000 was made to the faculty interchange pro gram of the American Society o; Engineering Education. The purpose of this plan is to strengthen engineering educa tion in predominantly Negro colleges through faculty inter change to top engineering schools. ing with striking three-inch flower cluster on strong stems. Only one of its kind and most useful delphin ium. It took over 25 years of persistent breeding to produce this marvelous strain. Zinnia, FL hybrid giant cac tus-flowered, “Yellow Zenith.” Most colorful, brightest yellow, of these finest of all zinnias. Snapdragon, FL hybrid, “Floral Carpet Rose.” Ever blooming, dwarfest and most beautiful of this new bedding, edging and pot plant type.
