SUNSET ACRES APEX-As a prelude to open ing wide the gates of our play ground lor the first time, I undertook the “trek*’ to Rocky Mount, at the invitation of Rev, George W. Dudley, to witness a huge Men’s Day succes at Mount Zion First Baptist Church. The executive officer of Cha pel Hill, a history-maker a mong Black people, in a clear lyric baritone authoritatively pitched voice, out-lined his pre scription, “in action medi cine,” for the malaise that is snapping at the very vitals of our Country. “I am grateful for my peo ple's confidence plus the con fidence of enough forward look ing, progressive White voters In our town, to put Into the of fice of Mayor the first Black man."’ University towns, with their activated intelligensia, have away of up-setting the marble-llka notions of “solid citizens.’' If we eould come from a re presentative of service work ers to the Chiefs seat, what could we do in the State’s Capi tal? We have St. Augustine, N. C, State University, Shaw Uni versity, Peace, Meredith arm! other good schools which pro duce enough thinkers to make Raleigh a boom town for to getherness. The next Saturday, Oct. U, I went to the Jack Tar in Dur ham to hear speakers and par ticipate in seminars at the An nual Convention of The State National Association For The Advancement of Colored Peo ple, At the first seminar, chaired by an erudite, capable woman, who was speaking: “Racists say 'Negro wants separatism,” Dcr/t believe them, There will be new schools but they will be Integrated, siqt segregated. In the District of Columbia ' and Kansas, a young woman had been denied entrance into a predominately white school; the Supreme Court has ruled that -freedom of choice does not insure sufficient desegrega tion; that money from U. S, Treasury to States for relief of poor is marked for cloth ing and adequate diet. The 1954 decision still holds: There is no such thing as sepa rate but equal; we want text books revised to include history of Black people who helped to shape this Nation; Who planned and surveyed and ‘laid out* the city of Washington; who design ed and made the fore runner of the modern shoe; who invented the clock; who performed the world’s first open heart surgery; who developed the blood bank system, and so on, ad infinitum?” Another semi nar, moderated by another scholarly woman, discussed and distributed a Descriptive Bifa ll ogr pah y of 399 ' Pre-School ! and Elementary School Texts and Story Books. In its fore word, Francis Keppei, former United States Commissioner of Education, wrote: “Twenty years have passed since Ralph Ellison wrote about what it was like to be a Negro in America: ‘I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allen Poe; nor am I one of your Hollywood-movie ecto plasms, I am a man of sub stance, of fiesh and bone, fi ber and iiquids--and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, you understand, simple because people refuse to see me.” The Malcolm X University, Jewish labor Body Opposes Haynsworth NEW YORK, N. Y. - The Jewish Labor Committee, an organization representing over 509,000 Jewish workers in the organized labor movement, re stated its opposition to the ap pointment of Federal Juuge Clement F» Haynsworth to the United States Supreme Court. In a letter to each individual Senator, Charles S, Zimmer man, President of the Jewish Labor Committee, last week called upon the Senate to vote against confirmation of Hayns worth’s appointment. Zimmerman declared tha’ Judge Haynsworth has ruled in favor of perpetuating racial segregation In a number of sases dealing with public schools. He added, “Our Coun try’s efforts to give black A mer leans and other minorities a feeling that they are first class citizens will be seriously im paired by this appointment. ‘lf the Senate confirms tb’s appointment blacks and other Americans who espouse equal rights for all of our citizens may have good reason to ques tion die Senate’s credibility on ibis Issue. Os course, we are disappointed with President Ntam’s recommendation of Judge Haynsworth. * ’ Zimmerman also stated -.hat Haynsworth’s record has been hostile toward organized labor to such an extent that the AFL CIO opposes his confirmation. also in Durham, is designed, not to effectuate separatirns, but to make Black people visi ble, so that people who for merly refused to see them will be intellectually, economical ly, and, because of the “Hu manity of God.” religiously evangelized so that they will be compelled to see them. Well, after all this traveling educa tion, I came home just in time to be among 23 Black men, whose spokesman was brother McNeil. We met with the Holly Springs “Town Fathers” to ask why the entrances to churches peopled by Black people were a “sea” of mud when it rates, while the entrances to churches with white communicants were paved. You seP, the Black men 'are city tax payers too. We were promised action. I started this by stating all the above was a prelude to our play-ground opening. Well, the day finally came. There were wiener roasts, sand somer saults, shuttle cock games, by cycle, dashes and three leg ged races; and not a single fight, though they were off springs of NAACP'ers Black separatists, iritegrationists, poor, underpriveged, “good livers,” saints and sinners; but all in harmonious hilari ty. “Suffer little children to come unto me—Except ye lie come as one of these--A Lit tle child shall lead them-- t 1.55* PARTS SANDERS FORD PARTS DEPARTMENT—HARR INGSTON ST, SANDERS FORD SANDERS FORD Professional Job Recruiter !
