HampUmSmrU s BigDrugßattie * HAMPTON, Va, - Hampton Institute has announced that plans are being finalized for the inauguration of an Office of Ed ucation financed project to com bat drug abuse. This project will be known as the Hampton Institute Drug Education Pro gram, An official of the Office of Education has stated that Hamp ton Institute is one of 20 col leges being funded to become models In a nationwide drug ed ucation program. Hampton In stitute has been Informed bv the OE that a total of $45,000 will be available for its 1971-72 drug education program when all as pects of it are approved. The target date for final approval is August 15, 1971. The program will be student organized and student adminis tered with some staff and faculty assistance. Mr. J. Franklin, a consul tant to the U. ’S. Office of Ed ucation, is working with the staff in completing their proposals r for the inauguration of HIDEP. Mr. Franklin is an associate of Dr. Helen Nowlis, author of numerous articles as well as the authoritative book, Drugs On the College CamtpusJDr. Nowlis is regarded as the leading expon ent on drug education in the U nited States. The planning committee has held meetings with college of ficials, faculty members, and a wide range of community agen cies and organizations. At a re cent meeting, members were present from the Hampton City Managers office, the Hampton and Newport News Police De partment, Board of Education, Peninsula Family Service, Pen insula Drug Council, Mayor's Office, Representative of the Governor's Council on Drugs, Chairman of Peninsula Mental and Retardation Board and oth ers. The staff has emphasised that this is to be an educational program for all Hampton insti tute students. Rarer at 10:31 p.m. Friday, that she and Miss Cindy Williams, 47, same ad dress began to argue and Miss Williams picked up a soft drink bottle and hit Mrs. Brown in the head, causing a one inch laceration Mrs. Brown was in - toxicated at the time, but stated she would sign an assault with a deadly weapon charge against her when I wakes up. * * * BEATS UP OI.D OLD MAN Johnny Maple Banks, 75, 543 E. Jordan then left and was walking In the 2400 block of Wake Forest Road when be was picked up by Of ficer Hinton. Moss signed an assault with a deadly weapon warrant, while the cop charged disorderly conduct. * * * HIT TWICE WITH AXE Mrs. Mary Allen Foster, 53, 112 Pender Street, told the law at 10;43 a.m. Saturday, that she got into a fuss with her boyfriend, Albrey Walters, 36, 608 Dorothea Drive. She said Walters struck her twice with an axe. The woman was struck by the blunt end of the weapon. Black Unemployment Critical WASHINGTON - About 280 young men and women, mostly black, have just began working in Labor Department offices throughout the country as Summer Aides. About 150 of these_ young pe’ople have been hired for jobs here. The purpose of the summer aide program is to give en rollees work experience and a chance to earn money. The aides will perform a wide variety’of duties during the program which ends in mid- September. They have been hired as clerks, engineer’s aides, printer’s aides, mes sengers and other Jobs.
