He said one of the subjects was about six feet tall and weighed about 150 pounds, with a very large afro hair cut. Johnson said this per son pulled out a small calibn pistol and said, “Hey boy. Roxboro Street, Dur ham, told Officer Gabriel San ders at 11:50 p.m. Friday, that she was riding in the 2300 Flock of Sandcrford Road with Charles Elliott McCrory, when an argument began and he start ed striking her with his hands and fists. McCrory, who was operating a 19G3 Mercury, she said, pushed her out of it while the car was in motion, caus ing bruises to both knees, and her pocket book, containing sl3, was left in the car, McCrory v,as later arrested and charged with assault ami battery and driving with expired Florida license tags. + * t V II F STRIKES HUBBY Fail Junior Edmonds, Wash ington Terrace, reported to Of ficer 8.8. Edmonds was advised to sign an assault with a deadly w eapon warrant against his w ife if he wished to do so. REFUSES TO ANSWER Mrs. Annie Louise Rand, 1409 E. Jones Street, “clammed up’’ when Officer S.M. Todd was called to her house at 4:43 a.m. Saturday. She did, however, toll the cop that she fell down some stairs and “refused to make any other statements. “Investigative notes revealed that the complainant was an “88“ (drunk) and refused toco operate. She suffered lacera tions of the head. * * * STEREO “SWIPED* - Mrs. LaFrances Archible, 320 E. Martin Street, told Officer R.E. Holland at 11:54 a.m. Sa turday, that she left her house at about 11:50 p.m. the night before and went to the vari ous clubs in her neighborhood. She said she returned about 1:45 a.m. and noticed that her Motorola console stereo was missing from her living room. Entrance was gained through a rear door. The console was valued at S3OO. Damage to the back door frame was set at $lO. * * * SURROUNDED AND ROBBED Ashley Carlyle Morris, white male, 1612 Oberlin Road, in formed Officer R.W. Sneeden at 10:32 p.m. Friday, that he was surrounded by a ‘‘large group of Negro males’’ and forced to give them his money ($6) in the 200 block of Lord Ashley Road. The complainant refused to try to identify any of the men for fear of repri sals. * * *■ THROWS WINE BOTTLE Miss Parthenia Rose Sanders, 32, 522 E. Cabarrus Street, reported to Officer C.J. Perry at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, that Roose velt Johnson, 30, 623 Dorothea Drive, told her to “clean his house up some” and she re fused. She said Johnson then threw a wine bottle at her, striking her on the back of the neck. The bottle also cut a gash in Miss Sanders* nock. “Jealousy and anger” were list ed as motives on the cop’s gen eral offense report. * * * STABBED IN NECK Eddie Charlotte, 42, 215 S. Person Street, told a cop at 8:03 p.m. Thursday, that he went to the National Market, corner of E. Martin and Wolfe Sts., to cash a check and when he came out, about ten colored males gathered around him. He declared that one held a knife at his throat and then stabbed him in the back of the neck, and “relieved” him of about $3 in cash. MCKINLEY MAYS Depart me n t of Agronomy Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has begun studies of an ornamental plant, Shaw University's 106th Opening Convocation Set For September 16 Shaw University has set Sept. 16 at 11 a.m, as the date for the University's opening con vocation. To be held in Spaulding Gym nasium, the 106th formal open ing for this academic year will focus upon intensive planning sessions, which have been under way since the August 16th facul ty-s t a f f f-student pre-school conferences. Shaw proposes to be the launching pad for building new institutions, and strengthen ing existing institutions in the communities of the poor, the black and the disadvantaged, concentrating on increased in volvement within the local, state and regional areas. Launching this new involve ment under the 9th president of Shaw, Dr. J. Archie Har graves, who will be the convo cation speaker, the institution has chosen as its theme this year, “From Rhetoric To Im plementation.” The president will relate his address to the plannning that has taken place since student ficer F.L. McGill of 716 Edgehill Road, Fayetteville, has com pleted basic training at Lack land aFB, Tex. He has been assigned to Keesler AFB, Miss., for training in the ad ministrative field. Airman Me Gill is a graduate of Anne Chesnutt High School and at tended Durham Business Col lege. COMPLETES BASIC TRAIN - ING-Airman Danny J, Holder, grandson of Mrs. Anna P. Whit ley of Rt. 1, Zebulon, has com pleted basic training at Lack land AFB, Tex. He has been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo., for training In the munitiQiis and weapons maintenance field. Airman Holder is a 1971 graduate of Smtthfield-Selma Senior High School, Smith field. native to the South, as a source of oilseed and epoxy acid. The project is funded by the Agri cultural Research Service of the U. S. Department of Agricul ture. Dr. Mays has begun studies of Stokes Aster in which the seeds of the plant will be ana lyzed to determine its use as a source of epoxy acid which is used as a stabilizer for plastics, in glues and other products. He has planted a field plot of the Stokes Aster and under controlled and natural environ mental will attempt to arrive at the adaptability of the plants to the area and design studies to determine seed yields under varying practices. He hopes the studies will show that Stokes Aster can be harvested In a manner similar to rice, and once It is found to be adaptable to Louisiana conditions an important new oil seed crop will possibly result.
