FROM RALEIGH’S OFFICIAL POLICE FILES THE CRIME BEAT (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) ACCUSES HUS BA JO Mrs. Mary Carney Howard, p 26, 12 iO Walr.ui Street, Inform ed Officers 23. W. Martin and O. T. Wester at 20:20 a.m. last Friday, that her husband, Frank Howard, HI, 33. same address, came home and beat her with his hands and fists. The cops advised the woman to sign an assault on a female warrant against her mate. She suf fered multiple bruises. * * * ST A RBF.D TN STOMACH James Thomas Woodard, 27, 317 S. East Street, reported to Officer I„T, Liggins at 2:51 a.in, Friday that he walked out of his house and was hit with a .stick by an unknown person. He lost consciousness and was taken to Wake Memorial Hos pital. where it was discovered thai he had been stabbed in the stomach. He stated that earlier in the night, he had an argu ment with an unknownperson.lt was found that Miss Brenda Me Coy of 317 S, East St., know tiie person with whom Mr. Woodard argued and it is bo - ilevecl that the same person he wrgued with, stabbed him. Woodard also was cut on the face and head. + * * ATTACKED AT HOME Eddie Lee, Jr., -10, 1100 S. State Street, told Officer F.L. Rountree at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, that he v.'as in bed when some one came to the door and knock ed. Lee said when he opened the door, someone struck him in the face, knocking him down, then kicked him. As the sub ject left the scene, he grabb ed a single barrel shotgun from behind the door. An assault warrant was advised. * * ♦ attacked by husband Mrs. Hattie Mae Hopkins, 30, 410 S. Swain Street, informed Officer H. L. Busing at 7:33 p.m. Thursday, that her husband, LaMonte Sherman Hopkins, 23, came home at 8:15 the night before drunk. The worn*., said they got. into an argument, which resulted in her t’tting cut. She told the cop at she was going to sign an assault with a deadly weapon warrant against her husband. She said she was cut on the left hand. The officer was unable to locate the suspect. She said young Jones was wearing olive green pants and a brown shirt. ■¥ # * STRUCK IN EYE Miss Patricia Ann Denning, 1613 Burgundy Street, Apart ment 2, told Officers J.W. Ho ward and P, D, Stibaek at 9:16 p.m. Saturday, that a friend and a subject named David Elliot:, 24, address unknown, were ar guing, and she attempted to stop them from “fussing,” and El liott then struck her in the left eye with his fist. Miss Denn ing said she would sign an as sault on a female warrant a gainst the man when she finds out his address. The incident occurred at 1917 Pender Street, * * * TWO ARGUE, ONE CUT John Jenkins, 39, 515 S, East Street, informed Officer Ralph Clavborne at 7:53 p.m. Satur day. that he was assaulted in the 30i) block of E. Cabarrus Street by John Tyree, 43, ad dress unknown, during an ar gument, Mr. Jenkins was treat ed and released at Wake Memor ial Hospital for a three inch cut on the left arm. He stat ed he would sign an assault with a deadly weapon warrant against Mr. Tyree. * * * ANOTHER KNIFE USED Willie Smith, 56, 1435 Car nage Drive, reported to Officer W ,C. Hinton at 5:55 p.m. Sa turday, that Jimmy Badgett, Rt» 3, Raleigh, was mad with an unknown subject and that Bad gett was going toward this sub ject when Mr. Smith stepped between them to try to pre vent the fight. However, Smith was cut on the left side of his chest by the knife held by Bad gett. Smith said that Badgett “is my friend and I will not sign a warrant against him, because the cut was acci dental.’’ ♦ * * FOILS WOULD-BE ROBBER Thomas Eugene Powell, 18, 1304 E. Edenton Street, told Officer W.B. Holland at 3:02 P.m. Friday, that he was gett ing out of a car in the 700 block of E. Davie Street when someone stuck a gun In his back and said, “Give it up, everything you have ” Powell said he turned around and grabbed the gun and wrestled with the man. He also said the man then hit him in the back of the head and “split the scene” towards “The Bottom,” Powell identified the subject as Keith Johnson, 717 E, Davie Street. Lionel Jackson, 1212 Walnut Street, was listed as a witness. Young Powell suffer ed a laceration on the rear of his head. * * * ASSAULTS FEMALE Miss Jo Ann Brown, 20, 324 W. South Street, informed Of ficer a. i .. iviunday at 4:35 p. m. Friday, that she was at her cousin’s house (206 Dorothea Drive), and Oma Hunt. Jr., 31, came by and asked her to go with him to his house. The woman said that when she got to Hunt’s house, she went in side and he hit her in the face, then choked her “and accused me of going out with someone else.” The officer’s report ends thusly: “The complain ant stated she broke aloose and ran.’’ Miss Brown suffer ed bruises about the face and head. Hunt was “hauled off” to Wake County Jail on an as sault and battery rap. 3ft * * WOULDN’T 'BUY’ GIRL Donald Makepeace Albright, white resident of 2618 Poole Road, told a. cop at 4:31 p.m. Friday, that he was walking west on W. South Street and a Negro male approached him at about '2:30 a.m. that day and asked him if he “wanted to buy a girl.” Albright said he replied in the negative and the man then hit him and knock ed him to the ground. He de clared he was then kicked by the subject. He suffered a cut lip, rib bruises, and his left eye was bruised. * * * REFUSED TO LEAVE William Henry Burwell, 50, 2805 Hasty Street, reported to a cop at 8:30 p.m. Friday, that he was at his apartment house, painting in the base ment apartment when Rufus Hockaday, 28, 652 Coleman St., came in and told Miss Jewelene Southerland to leave the apart ment and told her that he (Mr. Burwell), didn’t want her paint ing for him. Miss Southerland informed Hockaday that she was not leaving and said she was going to help Burwell paint the apartment. Blount Streets. * * * ASSAULTED BY WOMAN John Arthur Sanders, ,• 38 Dorothea Drive, infornu l an officer at 1:03 t,m. Saturday, that Miss Mary Elizabeth Med lin, 17, 507 Dorothea Drive, and himself were arguing when “she pulled a knife and stabbed rne.” Sanders said he did not know where the knife “went” after he was stabbed. He ex hibited a stab wound in the up per left chest. The stabbing took place in the 1300 block of Branch Street, * * * CUT ON NOCE Larry Ellis, 24, 1202 Gat ling Street, told Officer Robert Jones at i!;48 a.m. Friday, that he was at 1325 Raleigh Boulevard at the apartment of i friend when Raymond Earl Hicks. 26, 1429 Raleigh Bou levard, came to the front door and asked to speak to Ellis- ’ Hicks is said to have asked Ellis for a dollar and when bo was refused, he struck Mr. i His across the nose with his hands and fists. Ellis, who suffered a cut on the right side of his nose, said he would sign an assault and battery war rant against young Hicks. * STABBED UNDER LUNG Walter Bridges, Jr,, 33, 408 Alston Street, reported to an officer at 1:05 pirn, last Tues day, that he had an argument with someone and that "some one” stabbed him with some type of sharp object. Bridges said he did not know “where 1 was or who it was that stabb ed me." He further stated that “if I knew who it was, I still wouldn’t sign a warrant.” He exhibited a stab wound un der his left lung. * * * DAMAGES WOMAN’S APART MENT Mrs. Valerie Ann Toney, 1359 Walnut Street, informed Officer C.W. Hairr at 2:35 a.m. Tues day, that Samuel D. Garner, 33, Oklahoma City, Okla., came into her apartment and started a fight with her. She said he broke two lamps and tore a hole ii: the screen door. The woman said Garner “had been staying with me for two days.” She refused to sign a damage to property warrant against him. * * V JAILED OVER TWO CENTS Officer Phil Elbert Braswell, a part-time employee of J.C. Penny’s, Inc,, 100 North Hills Mali, reported at 7 p.m. last Thursday, that he was on duty at the store when Miss Ann Jacqueline Jackson, 20, address unlisted, picked up two pieces of once cent candy and left the YWCA WILL The East Raleigh Branch of the YWCA on F.asi Hargett St., announces the schedule for sev eral classes which will be held at the “Y” this fall. Classes will be offered in sewing for adults and teenagers, baby sitter services as a shop ping day special and a defensive driving course. The adult sewing classes will be offered Monday and Wednes day mornings from 10 until 12. Eight lessons will be offered for $5.00. Eight lessons will be offered for teenagers in sewing. These classes will be held 'on Sat urday morning from 10 until 12. As a service to mothers, the “Y” is offering a special shop ping day special for mothers with a baby sitter service. This service is offered from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., at a cost of SI.OO. Swain Street, reported to Officer ILL, Rushing at 4:47 p.m. last Wednesday, that she arid her sister, Miss Ruby- Smith, 50, same address, got into an argument, which re sulted iii Miss Ruby Smith bit ing of! the left ear of her old er sister. Lo gan captivated her audinece and held it spellbound as she talk ed from the subject: '•Women in the Vanguard Yesterday and Today.” She so beautifully federated such women as De borah, Phyllis and Mahalia Jackson as they worked and la bored in their vanguards hi their times and plans, with emphasis on Better-Womanhood. Fire Destroys Method Home The home t Mr. and Mrs. Douglss Dunston, 705 Method Road, was destroyed by fire on Sunday, September 12, at 1:30 a.m. This fire was caused by fault ly electrical wiring.
