Richardson, associate dean of Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina is telling Saint Augustine’s College students. The students are, from left: Miss Mary Montague, junior ele mentary education major from Oxford; Robert A. McFadden, freshman, history government major of Summerton, S. C.; Miss Jo-Ann Wilson, freshman, Philadelphia, Pa., Miss Chris Hart, freshman, elementary education, Farmville. The Rev. Mr. Richardson’s appearance (at left) was the first in a series of lectures, sponsored by the Public Affairs Com mittee of Saint Augustine’s College. "Search for Your Identity/’ Benedict’s Chnpkin Advises St. Augustine’s Body " People are unhappy and 111 adjusted because they look in ward Instead of outward. They think too much about them selves Instead of things outside themselves." This Is what the Rev, Luns C. Richardson, as sociate dean of Benedict Col lege, Columbia, South Caro lina, told students and faculty of Saint Augustine’s College as he spoke on the subject, ‘'Searching for Your Identity," October 12, He said that real happiness and contentment comes not in what we have but In what we are doing, with and for others. "It matters little, for psy chological purposes, whether you Interest yourself in mak ing your town cleaner, in cor recting injustices, in helping the poorer and the mistreated, or enlisting in a campaign to rid your .city of illicit dope; whether you go in for boys clubs, vot ing projects, protest marches, reserach Into ways of making the physicial and social aspect of life better for all people,” he continued. "This is an age of Nega tion; of negative living, the "beat generation," and that seems ver> apt for the des enchanted, fatalistic viewpoint Church Chuckles by CARTWRIGHT '*'*.«< •: ?. They voice a re bellious No to parental authori ty; a resentful No to teachers arid counselor; an indiffer ent No to social and politi cal responsibilities; a sullen No to the ultimate problems of life and the world; a defiant No to religious traditions and institutions, even to God Him self; a belligerent No to past, present and future," he stated. ‘‘But such negation is not limited to a single ageor class. All of us, regardless of age are being called upon to say No, There is something very honest and daring and realistic in this new attitude. It takes courage to say No when here tofore men have said only yes. However, while giving due weight to the No, let us re member that it is not the only word.We cannot live by nega tion alone. Sooner or later, we must say Yes to something., even if it is only the utter futilitv ana vanity of life. "If we would find out identi ty, we must seek to find it in other human beings. If you live for yourself, you will bo bored to death." No one has learned the mean ing of living until he has sur rendered his ego the services of his fellow man. The speaker's appearance was the first in a series of lectures, sponsored by the Pu blic Affairs Committee of Saint Augustine’s College, Meditation "This one thing t do, for getting those things which are behind." Philipplans 3:13. There are times in life when we have so many things to do that we feel overwhelmed. Vv'e cannot enjoy the activities of the moment because of the un easiness and anxiety we feel about what Is yet to be done. We need, at such times, to take an attitude that will enable us to be deliberate, but efficient joyous, but productive. when we remember that we have access to an inexhaustible source of energy --God---and that we have the ability to or ganize our time and effort so as to accomplish efficiently and ef fectively what needs to be done, then the demands ahead do not harass us. Through our faith in God, we fee! a great strength rise up within us, and we experience clarity ana ord erliness of thought. Rather than looking ahead with tension and .anxiety, we feel joy at every challenge. When we feel that great de mands are made upon our time and energy, let us remember ihat as children of theaine la ther, heirs to His wisdom and power, we are equal to ail de niands-~that we have to meet only one single thing at a time, and that we have the know-how, the power, the ability to ac complish whatever needs to be accomplished. Today, now, right where we are, we must put into use our God-given talents and abilities, ■We must realize that God has a place for us, a place that only we can flll-and so, we must remain poised in His perfect peace, our attention centered firmly on the job ahead. Filled with joy and enthusi asm, we can perform each task, aware that our success does nos depend upon outer circum stances or environment, but up on living each day to the glory or our Creator.
