was returned in U.S. District
Court in Cleveland, Ohio,
against Detectives Edward C
Smith, Roland A. Salcer,
Joseph M Sas, Peter J
Previte, and Robert 0. Krai
The indictment said the five
violated the constitutional
right of Sherman D. Howard.

without due process of law.
Howard was allegedly kick
ed and beaten in the Geauga
County Safety Center in Char-'
don, ^io. near Cleveland on
Aug 22. 1972, after he had
been taken into custody on a*
narcotics charge.
Howard, who is black, was
taken to a hospital for
treatment. The five detectives
are white.
Howard is now confined to
the London. Ohio, correvtional
facility for possession of
narcotics and escape
