Jewish Home
Academy children, grades 1-6,
parents and teachers traveled to
Clemmons March 13 to
celebrate Purlm with residents
of the Blumenthal Jewish Home
for the Aged, niey brought
hamantaschen they had baked
at the Academy and sang a
program of songs.
According to Rabbi l\icker,
the visit with elderly Jews had
three purposes: “First, we
wanted to teach our children the
concept of mitzvah, visiting the
sick and aged, and the mitzvah
of bringing “misloach manot”;
second, we wanted to acquaint
kids with the idea of bringing
joy to others; and lastly, we
wanted to help them bridge'the
generation gap. Something is
missing when you don’t have
contact with the third genera
tion, with grandparents or
great-grandparents.” ^

Soviet Children Emotional Upsets
Soviet Jewish children in
volved in family breakups while
trying to emigrate to Israel suf
fer severe emotional damage
and may not adjust when their
ordeal is over, according to a
child psychiatrist.
“'llie loss of a parent is a loss
of such magnitude that children
cannot come away without
some emotional scars,” says Dr.
Kenneth Kessler.
Adolescents often turn their
anger toward deliquency, drug
abuse and alcoholism, he said.
Kessler is a staff psychiatrist
at the Foundling Hospital in
New York.
He said the results are a
process of denial, despair and
finally, hoplessness. Children
will become detached and
passive to the world around
them, Kessler added.
