When Harry Golden received his award by Governor Hunt and
his Commission of Cultural Resources in Raleigh recently, he made
the following remarks: “I am a survivor. If my father did not have
the courage and the imagination to cross the Atlantic and bring his
family to America in 1905, we probably would have all perished in
the Holocaust at Auschwitz. Instead I am here in the capital city of
this great state receiving the Award for literature from the hands
of Governor Hunt of North Carolina. I have been writing for a half
century. I have known little more than writing and I want to thank
Governor Hunt and his (Commission of Cultural Resources and this
audience here tonight. Thank you all for letting me live a little
longer.”

Soccer Banquet
The JCC's first soccer season
ended on a decided up-note as
each team won its last game.
These victories, the only one for
each team, made for high spirits
as the players, coaches, parents
and friends gathered for the 1st
annual banquet.
In addition to the individual
trophies presented to each of the
34 members of the two teams
special honors were accorded to
those who made the season
possible. Dr. Sandy Benjamin
and Ron lipsky were lauded for
their efforts as coaches and for
the way in which they stepped
in to take over responsibility
when the original coach left. It
was their effort, time, skill and
personalities which kept
everyone coming back for prac
tices and games even during the
times when there were no wins.
The team mothers drew their
share of much deserved recogni
tion. Both Judy Tritton and
Maxine Silverstein spent hours
on the phone notifying players
about game schedules, and
arranging transportation and
refreshments for each match.
Also honored were the three
assistant coaches who worked
with Dr. Benjamin and the un
der 10 yr. Jaguar team - A1
Rusak, Ben Massachi and
Dimitri Ostrovsky.
Plans are now underway for
possible additional post season
games as well as for a Spring
League. While these plans are
tentative there was agreement
at the Banquet that both teams
will be back stronger than ever
next Fall.
A new membership year is now beginning for the Jewish Community Center. The
membership year runs from January through December, and programs include
