Kim Lewis Shapiro, son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Shapiro and
grandson of Mrs. Annie Shapiro, recently received his I^Din psy
chology from the University of Nova Scotia. His fiance, Jane Ray
mond, who resides in Nova Scotia, Canada, also received her doc
torate in psychology from the University of N^ova Scotia. After their
marriage on Labor Day, they will continue “post doctoral” work in
psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Blrs. Nettie N. Smith of2054 Sharon Rd., Charlotte, is basically
a wonderful person, but that is just elementary. The important
thing is that she is a retired IWT and in a case of a colostomy opera
tion, when she is advised of it, she will go to the hospital to confer
with the doctor, and then go to the patient’s home to help them for as
long as needed. There are NO strings attached to this offer. She
accepts no money for her services. If you meet her you will see that
she is truly sincere.

Dr. Stephen Fishman,
professor of Philosophy at
UNCO and Hebrew Academy
President for the past two years,
was reelected president for 1980-
81. Also elected were Don
Tepper, vice-president; Lois
Schneider, secretary; Bob
Bernhardt, treasurer. New
members on the board are
George Ackerman, Mary Gor-
dan and Larry Widis.
Dr. Fishman appointed the
following chairmanships; Doris
Bernstein and Sue Brodsky,
education; Mark Weinglass and
Mike Shapiro, buildmg and
grounds; Sue Brodsky, recruit
ment; Mary Gordan and Doris
Bernstein, fall event; Arlene
Shapiro, raffle; Mel Berzack,
spring event; Dr. Saul Brenner,
publicity.
“Ihis should be the best year
in the Academy’s history”,
stated Dr. Fishman. “We will
have the largest student group
(approximately 50 students)
and largest staff (five teachers
including the dire^or). 1 am im
pressed with the enthusiasm,
dedication and variety of skills
of the staff 1 believe that the
Academy will be able to offer a
program equivalent to any
Hebrew day school in the coun
try.”
To accommodate .the in
creased enrollment a second
building on the property will be
completely renovated for
educational purposes. During
the summer two “paint ins” took
place through the volunteer ef
forts of the parents. The outside
of the main building was pai
nted and there was a general
“housecleaning” of the interior.
