The National Council of
Young Israel, a synagogue
organization of Oithodox
Jews, is embarking on a ma
jor investigation of the high
price of kosher food.
According to a spokesman
for the 70-year-old Orthodox
organization, the investiga
tion was prompted by a
growing number of com
plaints about the high cost of
maintaining a kosher home.
Under the strict dietary
and>itual laws of Orthodox
Judaism, foods must be
prepared in rigid adherence
to certain rules and certified
as kosher.
One major reason for the
new concern stems from the
current vitality of the Or
thodox movement within
American Judaism.
Many young Jewish
couples who want to keep a
kosher home are unable to do
so because of the high cost.
The issue has sharply
divided the Orthodox com
munity.
Experts on both sides of

level price is anywhere bet
ween 50 percent and 100 per
cent higher than similar non-
kosher items.
A retail businessman
specializing in kosher food
strongly disagreed and
claimed that the national
kosher certification agencies
went beyond the minimum
standards of the dietary
laws, setting such extreme
requirements for certifica
tion that they created essen
tially a monopoly situation
in which a few slaughter
houses are put in the posi
tion of controlling the
market. He said his profit on
kosher meat and poultry pro
ducts was a mere 5 percent,
and high prices in his store
reflected the premium he has
been forced to pay on the
wholesale level.

(under the age of 13) and girls
