BBYO This ’n That Hebrew Academy Spring Event Bob Bernhardt, president of the Hebrew Academy, announced that Arlene Shapiro will be in charge of tickets and reservations for the Hebrew Academy’s Spring event. Torah Readers at the Academy Much thanks to Moshe Ravivi, Cantor Frank Birnbaum, Lenny Fox and Arthur Tirsun who read the Torah portion at the school’s Thursday morning service. Special Activities at the Academy Recently the kindergarten class went to the Nature Museum and attended their program on dinosaurs. The first graders have learn ed a song about an aniyah (boat) and have begun to read the bless ings for wine, fruit, vegetables and bread. Children from the se cond grade have been learning about Norway as part of their social studies unit. They had the pleasure (or displeasure, for some) of tasting sardines from Norway and learned a Norwegian game. The third, fourth and fifth graders have been taught about car bohydrates and starches in foods. Perhaps this will enable them to help some of their dieting parents. Trip to Hezekiah Alexander House Recently the children of the Academy (all except the kindergarten class) took a trip to Hezekiah House. The first and se cond graders viewed an exhibit of colonial toys and the third, fourth and fifth graders made candles and learned about the history of candlemaking. Havdaiiah Service During November and December students attended the Temple Israel sponsored Havdaiiah services which were held m various homes. Story About Hebrew Academy In the November/December issue of Charlotte magazine is an ar ticle about Charlotte’s private schools. Included in the article is a short discussion of the Hebrew Academy, its present status and future goals. The Charlotte Jewish News is pleased to announce that we have two, not one, winners of the Chanukah Coloring Contest. The judges had a difficult time deciding between the two finalists, and so decided to award two prizes instead of one. The winners are: Jonathon Simon, son of Marcia and Paul Simon and Laurie Klugman, daughter of Randee and Warren Klugman. By Jodi Mond At the time of this writing everyone is anxiously awaiting the Regional BBYO Convention to be held in Winston-Salem at the Hyatt House. Next month I will report on all of the activities that took place there and hopefully all the awards that we will be taking back to Charlotte. MITS Chaverim and Chai BBC recently had a joint induction of their MITS (members-in- training). Each MIT received a white carnation as a token of the evening. Chosen as the outstanding MITS were Audrey Jankowitz of Chai and Jodi Mond of Chaverim. They were also presented with white roses. Fund-Raising The girls were very busy dur ing December doing gift wrapp ing at the Charlotte B’nai B’rith Women’s gift wrap booths. The MITs from Chaverim also man ned booths at the JCC Mac- cabead Festival. News from Aberman The boys from Mickey Aber man AZA had a bowl-a-thon during December. The chapter also had a sleep-over at Mike Phillip's house which was chaperoned by Irving Mond, their new advisor. Another one was also held at Donald Anoff’s Special Program On December 6 Chai and Chaverim had a joint meeting with a special program on sex. Maddye (Mrs. Robert) Stein, who is also an advisor for Chaverim, conducted the pro gram. She will be specializing in speech, language and auditory pathology at Contentnea School in Kinston, N.C. ^ Lee Diamond has been designated a Chartered Life Underwriter by the American College of Chartered Life Underwriters. Lee is a partner in Scepter Group, Ltd. • Rabbi Harold Krantzler was elected president of the Charlotte Area Clergy Association. He is the only Jewish member of the group. Michael Chase, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Chase, who recently graduated from the Wharton School of Business and Finance, U. of Pennsylvania, is working at Banker’s Trust in Columbia, S.C. • Natalie (Mrs. Norman) Cohen has been reappointed by Gover nor Hunt to the 20 member board of the N.C. Council on the Status of Women. Her team will expire on June 30,1982. Jamie Steinberger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Steinberger, has been elected to the National Beta Club and is the president of the Pep Club at Carmel Junior High.
