This course will ex plore the issues which have impeded the pursuit of peace for Israel: a desire for secure borders, the changing com position of Israeli society, the effect of a multi-party political system, Palestinian refugees, the PLO, strife in Lebanon, roles of the super powers, and the disposition of territories captured by Israel in 1968. Dr. Ingalls has traveled and lectured in Israel and recently presented a paper on voting on Israeli issues in the U.N. at a con ference in Haifa. ‘The Jewish Experience in America: A Literary Perspective” will be led by Dr. Jay Jacobi, Assistant Professor, Department of English. There will be two six-week sessions, both to be held on Sunday nights from 7-9 p.m. Session I -September 12, 19, Oct. 3-24; Session II - October 31, November 7, 14, 21, ,December 5,12. It is impossible to know modern American literature without seriously consider ing the work of Jewish authors. In their quest for values in a confusing and confused age, Jewish- American writers have made distinctive contributions to contemporary culture in the United States. Such writers as Bellow, Malamud, Roth, Singer and Potok are finding a national readership rather than the largely ethnic au dience for which their predecessors had to settle. Critic Irving Malin explains: “It is not so much that the Jew has caught up with America. America has at long last caught up with the Jew. His search for identity is its search. Its quest for spiritual meaning is his quest.” Many of the peren nial concerns of Jewish writers, concerns which were once considered parochial, are now universal. In Series I we will focus on a sense of marginality or alienation which serves, even more than religion, as a common bond for nearly all Jewish writers and explore the ef fects of this on their works. Stories by Singer, Malamud, Cahan, Wiesel, Bellow and others will be explored. Series II will focus on the family and the theme of generational conflict, the struggles betweenrents and children. The family in con temporary society, some say, is an endangered m- stitution; this concern always has been central to the Jewish literary imagina tion. Read and discussed will be works by Potok. Bellow, Malamud. Roth. Kaplan and others. The fees for these study groups are: $35.00 - JCC Members; $50.00 Non- Members.
