Temple Israel
Votes **Yes^*
“The vote is almost 3 to 1
in favor.”
As President Jerry Levin
spoke those historic words
the crowded I.D. Biumenthal
Hall broke into applause.
The membership of Temple
Israel had just approved the
Joint Venture Agreements
and agreed to full participant
status in the community Pro
ject.
The vote was the culmina
tion of several hours of
discussion and exchange of
ideas. A cross section of
Temple membership ex
pressed their ideas on both
.sides of the issue. Those
speaking varied in age.
length of residence in
Charlotte and degree of Tem
ple participation. But. as one
gentleman put it. each of
them was “a member and a
.•ew. ' Though opinion and
feelings were voiced both pro
and con. it was clear that
each speaker chose his or her
words carefully in order to
Dj;eserve the sense of family
"unity so inherent in the Tem
ple.
With this vote, all of the
participating institutions
have now indicated accept
tance of their participation
in the Project. Temple Israel,
Temple Beth El. The JCC,
The Hebrew Academy and
the Federation have been
bonded together by their
membership and encouraged
to complete the tasks involv
ed in bringing the Project to
fruition.
In the words of Rabbi
Richard Rocklin of Temple
Israel. “This is the time; this
is the moment. Let’s do it!”
A Word From
Harry Swimmer
One look at the total and
at the bricks and you know
what those of us working on
the campaign have known
all along * we are going to
go over the top!
The overwhelmingly
fositive vote at Temple
srael has led to an increas
ed out-pouring of pledges.
If we have a problem, it is
getting to personally see
everyone, because
everyone deserves to be
seen, solicited and thank
ed.
If you are one of those
special people who want to
give and haven’t as yet
been called - call us. I will
guarantee one of the
volunteers jvill be inade
available no matter ^how
busy our schedule:
All our volunteers can
feel the excitement in the
air. Can you imagine how it
feels to talk about giving to
an enthusiastic prospect.
When you give willingly
and generously you give
more than dollars, you give
a shot of adrenalin to a
volun.t?er and that
volunteer i^es on to the
nex^ prospect with even
greater enthusiasm. How
you give really makes the
difference, and you have
been making the difference
- thanks!
Two new volunteers have
also made a tremendous
difference this past month.
There is just a mountain of
details in a campaign of
this size. Cary Bernstein
and SchreibTnan kave
taken that mountaia and
cut it down to manageable
size. We couldn’t function
without them.
Working together we will
and we are making
Charlotte the most outstan
ding Jewish community
anywhere!

Joint AJE Institute
“You can’t just build buildings, you have to build people. "
Abe Luski
Building people and building community, those have been
the tasks of Track II. the unique project created and chaired
by Abe Luski. Track II has brought together people from
every aspect of organized Jewish life. As appointees of the
institutions and organizations, the Track II delegates have
met in sub-groups around shared interests in aspects of com
munity life.
The first of these aspects was Adult Jewish Education.
More than 27 delegates met to discuss their ideas on the
needs and ways to get people involved in learning about their
Judaism. The process took almost 2 years. Now the members
of the Jewish community are about to reap the fruits of that
process.
For all too many of us, our Jewish education consisted of
drivmg teachers crazy. As a result, at best, all we know are
disconnected bits of information about ourselves as Jews.
Track II decided the time was ripe for a special series of
classes designed to help people make the connections, to
become comfortable in temple, at home, on holidays and
festivals, at family events, with friends and, above all. with
their children.
