Dates: 4 Thursdays:

November 4
November 11
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Cost: $3.50 per person to cover Workbook
For: Mothers and Fathers and other interested adults.
Limited Enrollment: 20 people.
This program is designed to involve parents of adolescents
and pre-adolescents, and other interested adults in open,
supportive, and thoughtful sessions dealing with the
perplexing questions that surround adolescents newly
emerging sexual identities. A central purpose is to help
parents to understand the physical, emotional and social
aspects of growth to sexual maturity, as well as to enable
them to communicate their own values about sexuality more
effectively.
Parent Seminars recognize the importance of the family as
the primary vehicle for the transmissions of sexual values.
They do not advocate a particular value position. The Parent
Seminars are design to help parents think through their own
convictions, express them and explore strategies that can in
itiate family discussion and to develop effective techniques
for talking with their adolescent children about these issues.
Seminar 1: What’s Going On...Gives parents a chance to
reflect on teenage sexuality and to consider the implications
for their families.
Seminar 2: The Sexually Active Adolescent...Surveys ex
isting messages in adolescent culture, encourages parents to
reflect on their own experiences in growing up: read several
perspective on adolescent development and hear first-person
accounts of teenagers discussing their sexuality.
Seminar 3: Parents Can Help...Presents parents with
several statements on adolescent sexuality and lets them
hear other parents (via audio tapes) express their viewpoints
on adolescent sexuality and family communication.
Seminar 4: Strategies for Parent/Adolescent Communica
tion...helps parents to assess where they now stand on the
seminar issues and explores ways to begin and to maintain
family communication.
The facilitators for this workshop are members of our com
munity who have been trained by the Mecklenburg Council
on Adolescent Pregnancy.
