Pag* 6-THENEW8-May: 1S63 Thoughts From The Lubovitcher Rebbe By Rabbi Yossi Groner Shavuous celebrates the giving of the Torah to Israel. But what about the rest of the world? What does Torah require of the non-Jew? Torah prescribes for mankind the seven “Noachide Laws” which in clude basic moral precepts forbidding bloodshed, theft, etc., and mandating the establishment of a system of jurisprudence. These seven cardinal principles cover the broad range of faith, morali ty and social justice ap plicable to all societies. The Talmud teaches, “I have been created to serve my Creator”. Included in the basic mission of our creation is the obligation to influence gentiles to fulfill the seven mitzvots, as Maimonides states: “And so was Moshe our teacher commanded by G-d to persuade all the n0M§l^wiiIaFlethm world’s inhabitants to accept the commandments given to the children of Noach”; he further explains that the motivating reason to Noachide principles are to be observed is because G-d so comnaanded in the Torah. But if people fulfill them “...swayed by their own in telligence etc. they are neither the pious of the gen tiles nor their sages.” What is the most impor tant obligation of any ruling authorities in the light of the Noachide laws? — to see that their subjects live peaceable with each other. For no two individuals were created ex actly alike, therefore no two people share the same opi nions. Such basic differences have a tendency to grow into divisiveness, intolerance, and eventually “...people would swallow each other alive!” For this simple reason government is vital for all nations — to establish a law-abiding society based upon justice and fairness. This should be done ac cording to the Almighty’s in structions as embodied in the Noachide Code. The observance of the universal Noachide codes by the nations of the world has a direct effect upon the fulfill ment of Torah and mitzvot by our nation. The underly ing principle of the Noachide laws is the enhancement of peaceful habitation of the world. To study Torah and observe the mitzvos proper ly, Israel needs peace of mind and security which will occur when all nations con duct themselves in accord ance with the universal Noachide codes. To promote observance of these codes by all mankind is, therefore, a specifically Jewish obligation. **Moishyand The MitMvah Men** Richard Klein Visits Academy The value of tzedakah was the focus of a special pro gram when Richard Klein, President of the Charlotte Jewish Federation, visited the Hebrew Academy and spoke to the children about the activities of the Federa- tion. All grades learned major portions of the Haggadah, enabling them to make significant contributions to leading the Seder. Rabbi Yossi Groner visited the school to talk to the children about Passover.
