The staff members of the JCC, the Temples and the Academy are on the direct firing line for program and their input is essential in planning the building. As a part of a system of checks and balances, the final plans for both phases one and two must be approv ed by the Building Advisory Committee before being ap proved by the Foundation Board. The Advisory Com mittee consists of the Presi dent and one other represen tative from each of the par ticipating Institutions. It is chaired by Morris Speizman. For some it’s into the bank for the future; for others it is spent on personal pleasure; for still others it is “underwear money’’...things they need but would not choose if not encouraged by their parents. For David Asrael the choice was diminished by 10%. David knew exactly what he wanted and needed to do with that percentage of his gift money-he sent it as a contribution to the Federation-UJA. Much of their coverage was made possible through the efforts of Martin Hochbaum of the AJCongress and Rev. Fred Meredith. Rev. Meredith is the regional director of the International Christian Em bassy, Jerusalem. He has become a familiar friend to the Jewish community of Charlotte through his unceasing efforts to develop Christian support for the State of Israel. The two years of planning and a small amount of dollars resulted in a public relations miracle. The Federation and its CRC have' received in quiries from around the country asking for help in the planning of how to get other mayors to attend future Conferences. Finally, through the generosity of Lloyd Scher, all the newscasts of the trip have been preserved on video tape and are available for “borrowing”. charity is part of Jewish custom. For David, knowledge of Jewish tradi tions is a part of his basic up bringing. He is a product of the Hebrew Academy and the Academy is, in great part, a product of the efforts of his parents, Dr.'Gerson and Wilma Asrael. David’s gift was by no means small. It would have bought a great deal of per- sonal'pleasure or “underwear”, but, instead, it bought the gratitude of those in- need who will benefit from it and the respect of everyone con nected with the Charlotte Jewish Federation.
