State Licensed RICHARD BYER OWNER Jewish Cadets Commissioned NEW YORK, N.Y. - Thir- ty Jewish cadets, including four women, are among this spring’s graduates from four U.S. service academies. The 30 are being commissioned as officers, according to Rab* bi Herschel Schacter of New York, chairman of the JWB Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy. JWB representatives will present complimentary copies of The Holy Scrip tures to the Jewish officers at the baccalaureate ser vices. The presentation of Jewish books to the cadets is part of the intensified year-round program of outreach and ser vice provided the Jewish personnel at the academies by the JWB Chaplaincy Commission and local Jewish communal leaders. ‘‘The Jewish con- sciousness of the cadets has been raised considerably by the work of JWB, the Jewish Chaplains, and Jewish lay leaders,” Schacter said. “By doing this we heighten their receptivity to the role of Jewish lay leader ship,” he added. “The cadets will not only be in positions of Jewish leader ship within the armed forces, they are also potential leaders for positions in their civilian communities after they leave the service.” The 30 newly commission ed Jewish officers include 12 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Spr ings, Colo.; eight at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point; five at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.; and five at the U.S. Mer chant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. At the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Rabbi Avraham Soltes is part-time chaplain. Col. Donald L. Bernstien, West Point Jewish community coordinator, was honored by JWB at its Biennial Conven tion in Chicago with the presentation of the JWB Military Lay Leader Award. Graduation exercises will take place May 20. Chaplain (Capt.) Howard B. Zyskind is on full-time duty at the Air Force Academy. “I express my great ap preciation to JWB for pro viding each of the Jewish graduates with the special gift Bibles,” the chaplain wrote. The baccalaureate service took place May 28, graduation followed June 1. Rabbi Morris Rosenblatt serves as part-time chaplain at the U.S. Naval Academy. UJA National Fiy-In III NEW YORK, N. Y., May 10 — In the recent third United Jewish Appeal National “Fly-In,” teams of Israeli dignitaries and American lay leaders raised $510,829 for the 1983 Regular campaign in 24 small and intermediate communities nationwide, ac cording to Sandra Weiner of Houston, Texas, the pro gram’s National Chairman. That amount, said Mrs. .Weiner, a UJA National Vice Chairman who also chaired the two earlier Fly-Ins, represented a 50.6 percent in crease over giving by the same donors in 1982. In addi tion, she reported, $32,550 was pledged to the Israel Special Fund during the in tensive week of solicitation. The teams, consisting of eight Israelis and 16 Americans, solicited more than 100 donors; team members also participated in meetings, briefings, and newspaper, radio, and televi sion interviews. Participating Israelis were Lieutenant Colonel Shlomo Ariel, commander of a tank battalion; Walter Eytan, former Ambassador to France and political advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Bezalel Gordon, Director of the News Depart ment of the Government Press Office; Jonathan Liv- ny, Jerusalem attorney and former member of the Judge Advocate’s office of the Israel Defense Forces; Major Ruso Menachem, Air force pilot; Dr. Allen Pollack, a re cent immigrant from the U.S. and head of the In stitute for Leadership Development, the Jewish Agency’s major seminar center; Benjamin Varon, former ambassador in Latin Baccalaureate services there were held May 22, gradua tion was held May 25. Capt. Paul L. Krinsky supplied JWB with the names of the graduating cadets at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Krinsky, who serves as academic dean at the Academy, thanked “JWB for your continuing interest in our midshipmen.” Bac calaureate services will tr^ke place on June 19, and com mencement exercises on June 20. Also participating were local leaders Irwin Baker of the Jewish Federation of Raritan Valley, New Jersey; Allen Bassuk of San An tonio, Texas; Joe Bettman of Dayton, Ohio; Max Fried man of Cleveland; Colonel Jerome Hurwitz (ret.) of Boca Raton, Florida; Harriet Narens of Canton.
