After 3 Ousted Anti-
Semites Reinstated
TORONTO (JTA) - Mar
tin Hattersley, has resigned
as leader of the Social Credit
Party in Alberta, charging
that the party was headed in
the direction of Nazi Ger
many.
Hattersley, 49, quit in
anger after a 33-31 vote by
members to reinstate three
party officials recently
ousted for publicly making
anti-Semitic statements. One
of them, Jim Keegstra,
Mayor of the village of
Eckville, was restored to the
office of first vice president
from which he was removed
after his dismissal from the
local high school. Keegstra,
a teacher for 14 years, had
been preaching to his classes
that Jews are the root of all
evil in the world and that the
Holocaust never occurred.
A Queens court upheld his
dismissal which resulted
from complaints by parents
that their children were be
ing indoctrinated with anti-
Semitism. There are no Jews
in Eckville. Tom Erhart,
another Social Credit Party
official, was reinstated as se
cond vice president. He had
been quoted widely as say
ing, “We’re tired of listening
to this Holocaust. It is total
ly impossible for six million
Jews to die in concentration
camps.” The third official,
cited for anti-Semitic
statements was reinstated as
a regional supervisor. —
Hattersley, commenting
on his party’s action, said
“We cannot be Successor
party to the Nazi party of
Germany and we are heading
in that direction.” His posi
tion was strongly supported
by Sen. Ernest Manning who
was Premier of Alberta for 20
years when the Social Credit
Party governed the province.
He said he would have
reacted the same way as Hat
tersley because “there is no
room for anti-Semitism” in
the party.
Quebec Teachers Union
Distributes Anti-
Israel Poster
MONTREAL (JTA) - An
anti-Israel poster and pam
phlets being distributed in
provincial schools by the
Quebec teachers union refer
to “the genocidal war of the
Israeli government against
Palestinians” and urge
financial donations to
Palestinian “victims of
Israeli genocide. ” The man
behind it is Yvon Charbon-
neau, head of the 70,000
member teachers union.
West German Police
Cracking Down On
Anti-Semitic Oame
BONN (JTA) - West Ger
man police are cracking
down on the distributors of a
parlor game, the objective of
which is to get pawns
representing Jews into
squares representing Nazi
death camps. Police in
Zweibruecken in the Saar are
investigating two rightwing

produced the game. The
State Prosecutor is expected
to charge them with incite
ment to public disorder and
displaying Nazi symbols.
Justice Minister Hans
Engelhard said the game,
which has appeared here and
in other cities, “exceeds in
perversity ever3rthing that
has previously come from
neo-Nazis.” He said his
Ministry is working around
the clock to close loopholes
in the present laws forbid
ding the circulation of Nazi
propaganda.
The game called “Jews,
Don’t Get Angry,” is hand
drawn. It consists of a large
star of David, each of the six
points of which contains a
square with the names
Auschwitz, Treblinka,
Maidenek and other camps
where Jews were exter
minated during World War
II. Players move pawns ac
cording to the roll of dice;
each pawn represents one
million Jews. The winner is
the first to fill all six squares
and get the “Jews” into a
“central gas chamber.”
The game has been cir
culated by rightwing youth
groups to at least two
schools, a dance school and
two discotheques. It has also
been mailed to Jewish
families. This latest
manifestation of anti-
Semitism in West Germany
should not be seen as an
isolated case. On a radio in
terview at recent soccer
games, youths have shouted
“Juden Raus” (Jews Out)
and ‘‘Send him to
Auschwitz’

British Cabinet
LONDON (JTA) - Two
young Jewish ministers in
Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher’s new Cabinet are
attracting the most attention
here since the Conser
vative’s landslide election
victory June 9.
Nigel Lawson, 51, is the
first Jewish-born Chancellor
of the Exchequer since
Herbert Samuel held that of
fice in 1916.
Leon Brittan, 43, is the
first Jewish Home Secretary
since Benjamin Disraeli and
the youngest since Winston
Churchill. Both are sons of
Jewish immigrants from
Eastern Europe and typify
the breed of successful self-
made men whom Thatcher
seems to favor. Neither iden
tifies himself closely with
the Jewish community,
however. Both have non-
Jewish wives but neither
denies his Jewish family
background.
Swedish Anti-
Semite Sentenced
NEW YORK (JTA) - An
anti-Semitic agitator in
Sweden has been sentenced
to 10 months in prison for
disseminating hate material.
The conviction of Ditlieb
Felderer, a key adherent of
the Institute for Historical
Review (IHR), a U.S. based
outfit seeking to disprove the
Nazi Holocaust, was aided
by information provided by
the Anti-Defamation League
of B’nai B’rith.
The Swedish government
prosecutor, Torsten
Jonsson, in a letter to the
ADL’s European Office
director, Shimon Samuels,
thanked the ADL for the in
formation. “It wiAs of great
value for me and made it
easier for me to visualize the
background of the case.”
Jonsson wrote.
Felderer, who resides in
the Stockholm suburb of
Taby, publishes anti-Semitic
newsletters entitled “Jewish''.
Information,” “Bible
Researcher” and “Arab
News” which are distributed
throughout Europe.
According to the informa
tion supplied to the pro
secutor, Felderer was the
source of mailings to leaders
of the European Jewish com
munity which contained
pieces of fat and locks of hair
with an enclosed letter ask
ing recipients if they could
identify the contents as
Hungarian Jews gassed in
Auschwitz.
Newspaper Regrets
Anti-Semitic Ad
NEW YORK (JTA) - A
Singapore newspaper has
apologized to the Anti-
Defamation League of B’nai
B’rith for publishing an
advertisement for pianos
that contained an anti-
Semitic slur. The ad, placed
by the Chiu Piano firm, was
captioned, “Now, British
and German pianos at
Jewish prices.”
Dutchman Sentenced For
Anti-Semitic Act
AMSTERDAM (JTA) -
Henk Glimmerveen, former
chairman of the extreme
rightwing Nederlandse
Volksunie (NVU) party was
sentenced Friday to Six mon-
ths’ imprisonment for
writing and distributing an
anti-Semitic pamphlet. The
public prosecutor had
demanded a 10 month term.
Glimmerveen told the court
the prison sentence would
not silence him.
Maryland Man
Convicted For
Desecrating Synagogue
WASHGINTON (JTA) -
A 23 -year-old man was con
victed of drawing anti-
Semitic symbols on a Silver
Spring synagogue in what
the Jewish Advocacy Center
in Washington called one of
the few successful prosecu
tions in the United States for
acts of anti-Semitic van
dalism.
A jury deliberated for less
than two hours before retur
ning a guilty verdict on
charges of destruction of
property.
Man Convicted of
Vandalizing Property
Of Jewish Neighbors
NEW YORK (JTA ) -
Brad Barry, a Kings Point,
L.I., man convicted of van
dalizing the property of
Jewish neighbors, was
sentenced to 5-15 years im
prisonment by a Nassau
County Court Friday and
ordered to pay $16,000 to
cover the damages.
Barry was found guilty on
charges of arson and
criminal mischief against his
neighbors, Yaacov and Han
na Elkon. The charges in
cluded daubing the Elkons’
garage with swastikas and
anti-Semitic slogans, trying
to set fire to their house and
leaving a voodoo doll on
their lawn with a Star of
David on the doll’s chest and
a hypodermic syringe pierc
ing the doll’s eye.
The Jewish Advocacy
Center has filed a $6 million
suit in federal court against
Barry and two other Kings
Point men for terrorizing the
Elkons for the last three
years.
Nicaragua *s Jewish
Community Exiled By
Sandinist Government
NEW YORK, (JTA) - The
Sandinist. government of
Nicaragua has forced the
country’s entire Jewish com
munity into exile, con
fiscating Jewish-owned pro
perty and taking over the
synagogue in Managua, ac
cording to the Anti-
Defamation League of B’nai
B’rith.
The Sandinists converted
the synagogue in Managua
into a children’s social club,
covering exterior Stars of
David with propaganda
posters and adorning the in
side walls with anti-Zionist
propaganda.
Amsterdam Has Its
Third Jewish Mayor
In 6 Years
AMSTERDAM (JTA) -
Amsterdam, capital of The
Netherlands and its second
largest city, has its third
Jewish Mayor in succession
over a period of six years. He
is Ed Van Thijn, 48, who suc
ceeded Willem Polak when
he retired in June. The
Mayors of Dutch cities are
appointed by the govern
ment.
Van Thijn has been a
strong critic of the Israeli
government of Premier
Menachem Begin which he
considers reactionary. He
stated, in an article written
two years ago, that as a Jew
he feels solidarity with all
minority groups in Holland
and elsewhere.

halacha” (religious law) into

of the Reform movement
warned here that if the

Orthodox aliya to Israel
would dry up completely.
