Super Sunday
their Super Sunday pledge.
Super Sunday was actually
the completion of a weekend of
1984 Campaign activity. On
Saturday evening 25 health
professionals, including doc
tors, dentists, psychiatrists
and pharmacists, and their
escorts met to hear Israeli
lawyer Akivah Baum discuss
the current situation in Israel
and other world Jewish com
munities. The event lasted un
til long after midnight with an
extensive discussion between
those present and Mr. Baum.
Pledges from those attending
reflected an increase of 50%.
From Page 1
Those who convened that
evening were Drs. Sandy Ben
jamin, Jonathon Bregman,
Trevor Goldberg, Paul Putter-
man and Jared Schwartz.
On Super Sunday morning,
Mr. Baum met and spoke with
a dozen Charlotte Jewish
lawyers. He shared his ex
periences and ideas over
brunch at the Coliseum
Ramada. Several of those pre
sent became Super Sunday
volunteers later in the day.
Conveners for the brunch were
Marshall Karro, Miles Levine
and Jon Wallas.
USY
Temple Israel’s USY
chapter held their Fedl Sub-
Regional convention in
Charlotte on November 11-13.
Convention Cochairpeople
Audrey Jankowitz and Laurie
Goldman put together a
weekend that was extremely
fun for all. “Everyone who was
here for the weekend had an
excellent time, made many
new friends, and delved into
their own Jewish identity.”
Over 100 USYers were in at
tendance. In December, under
the direction of USY, Special
Projects Committee, Kevin
Levine, Louis Sinkoe and Jeff
Shapiro once again assembled
the giant 25 foot Chanukah
Menorah' that won national
recognition as Outstanding
Synagogue project. The
Menorah remained standing
throughout December.
USY History
In 1947, USY became a
topic of conversation among
Rabbis and laymen in Min
neapolis. They conceived the
idea of organizing a youth
group affiliated with the Con
servative Movement (United
Synagogue of America).
Though there was a youth
organization already in ex
istence, the YPL (Young Peo
ple League), it was felt that it
was not sufficiently centered
in the United Synagogue. The
first convention of USY while
still on regional basis, took
place in St. Paul, Minnesota,
in 1948.
Regions were soon establish
ed. Connecticut and
Southwest both formed af
filiated Regions in 1950. USY
movement quickly rose to a
national level and in December

1951 there was an Interna
tional Charter Convention at
Columbia University and the
Jewish Theological Seminary
in N.Y., with over 500
delegates from 14 states and
Canada. Officers were elected
and the International board
had begun. The movement had
grown to a membership of
30,000 young people. To date
USY has regions in Canada,
Mexico and the U.S.A. along
with a Chai Region in Israel
that was established in 1968.
We ar e proud of our chapter
which has made great strides
in the past two years.
