Page 6-THE NEWS-March, 1984 Inside Women’s Division Cocktail Party Honors Biden...Men’s Major Gifts Dinner By Marta Garelik On Feb. 4, preceding the din ner honoring Shelton and William Gorelick, the Women's Division of the Charlotte Jewish Federation sponsored a cocktail party in honor of Sen. Joseph R. Biden. It took place at the home of Patty and William Gorelick and was chaired by Rose (Mrs. Abe) LuskL All lades who had pledged $600 or more and their escorts were invited. Sen. Joseph Biden, from Delaware, is a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and has been closely assoc iated with issues involving U.S. policies for the Middle East; he is considered one of the strongest supporters of American commitment to Israel. In his address Sen. Biden pointed out what valuable work is being done by Women’s Divisions all over the country. He had high praise for their involvement which he considers a healthy and very important trend. He warned that the Holocaust as a powerful incentive to help Israel in her plight to stand up against her enemies has by now lost much of its impact; that most of her champions in the Senate like Humphrey and Jackson are no more; that Israel’s image as an underdog worthy of our compassion has changed to that of a buUy strong enough to do without privileged status. He impress ed upon his listeners to make sure that the new voting generation will understand these problems facing us and he expressed hope and con fidence that the audience would rise to these challenges. Those in attendance, including special guests were: M/M Philip Anoff, Mrs. Donald (Bobbi) Bernstein, M/M Marvin Bienstock, M/M Herman Blumenthal, Mrs. Marta Garelik, M/M Aaron Gleiberman, M/M Alan Gold berg, Mrs. Annie Gorelick. Pearl Kier, chairperson, welcomed our “Chaver,” Deb- by Miller of Greensboro, who is on the National UJA Women’s Division Board. Then Pearl introduced guest speaker, Lydia Eskenazi, public relations representative of the American Joint Distri bution Committee in Athens. Mrs. Eskenazi told the women, “You should be proud of UJA’s contribution to World Jewry. Thirty percent of UJA funds go to the Ameri can Joint Distribution Com mittee (AJDC), the health, welfare and education agency for Jews everywhere in the world. We are in the business of saving Jews and helping them to live in dignity as Jews. I like to think the AJDC stands for AMERICAN JEWS DO CARE.” This luncheon marked the first of the 1984 Women’s Division fundraising events.
