Page 6-THE NEWS-May, 1984 Thoughts From the Lubavitcher Rebbe The Sun and The Moon By Rabbi Yossi Groner The Jewish ceilendar has been calculated according to the moon, and the months begin with the birth of the new moon. At the time the Jews were preparing to leave Egypt, they were instructed to sanctify the new month when slighting the new moon. The same com mandment instructed them to celebrate Pesach in the spring. In order to bedance the dif ference between the solar year to the lunar year the Rabbis have added one month every two or three years. The addi tional month always comes before the month of Nissan when we celebrate Passover. This year is also a leap year where we have one added month. Both the sun and the moon were created to illuminate the world and each does so in a unique manner. The sun shines every day without a change except of course where there may be a change due to outside influences which may dim the sunlight. The moon, however, has its cycle every month. After it reaches its peak on the 14th or the 15th day of the month it begins to recede and is renewed with its birth at the beginning of the month. There is a lesson to be deriv ed from both the sun and the moon. The sun symbolzes con sistency and stability; the moon symbolizes change and renewal. There are consistent things we do everyday such as prayer, offering thanks to G-d when we rise for giving us life and sustaining us emd ac cepting G-d’s kingdom with reciting the Shma. At the same time we should add vitality to our daily ac tivities. Holidays are a good steirt since each holiday has a unique mitzvah connected to it such as eating matza on Pesach. The lesson we learn is clear. Beside the routine rituals and prayer we should renew our observance every day with added commitment and joy. Seeing is believing When the offices of the JCC and Federation were destroyed last August among the items thought lost was a 1955 Polaroid camera. Once used to take photos for the “Charlotte Jewish NewSf ” the camera had sat for over a year in a file drawer. Just last month the Charlotte police returned the camera which they had discovered when they sifted through the re mains of the bmlding right after the fire. The charred case and camera arrived at the temporary Federation offices with two-year-old film still in it. The results of trying it out are shown above. L. to R.
