Page 11-THE NEWS-September, 1984 m More In And Around The JCC You Should AUet Her - Dav Catttp Metttories She’s Nu By L. Edward Sizemore In our long tradition, children have always held a position of great importance. The Jewish Community Center recognizes this tradi tional importance of our children and has engaged the services of Irene Komor Direc tor of Children’s Programs. Formerly of Ithaca, New York, Ms. Komor has resided in Charlotte for about 2V2 ye£u*s, having come to Charlotte after a short stay in West Virginia. Ms. Komor’s duties as Director of Children’s Pro grams seem to be more than one woman should be able to handle in about forty hours per week (acutally, she does know all about overtime). She establishes classes for the various age-groupings of children and recruits and trains volunteers to teach the classes. The class offerings fall into two more-or-less distinct categories — those of the “academic” or classroom type and those of the “arts and crafts” or activities type. The mix appears to provide a well- rounded schedule of activities for the children — something for each child. Among other programs, Ms. Komor is continuing the “Creative Play Group” for toddlers up to age 2 Vs, and she has initiated'a new prog^ram called “After-School Care,” designed for elementary- school children. Other duties include working closely with “Children’s Conunittee” and a “Camp Committee.” The members of the two commit tees are volunteers having an interest in the programs of the Jewish Community Center. Though her professional duties are primarily with the children and children’s pro grams, she does get involved with various family activities. Ms. Komor works with a col league, Susan Ett, Director of Adult Programs, to coordinate family programs. Typical of such progr£uns are a family picnic and hike this month and a family Shabbat meal and worship service possibly for October. During November, Jewish Book Month, some local activities will be coor dinated by the two women and the JCC staff. Ms. Komor also meets with the parents of the children in the various pro grams. This is important to all teachers, of course, and Ms. Komor encourages all parents to take an active interest in their children’s programs at the JCC. Ms. Komor has, at the undergraduate level, the tradi tional liberal arts preparation, and, at the graduate level, she is currently pursuing the M. A. program in Human Devek>p- ment and Learning, with an emphasis upon guidance and counseling, at UNCC. She is, therefore, building the highly specialized skills of the profes sional in her field, and is bas ing this on the traditional broad'based liberal arts foundation. Irene Komer Ms. Komor’s professional experience includes working in a “career education” program for children in K-6 for the Ithaca, New York, public schools, under a Federal grant. Also, during the summer just now coming to a close, she served as the counselor to the counselor-in-trmning program at the JCC’s Camp Maccabee. On a personal note, Ms. Komor notes with both pride and anticipation that she will be married in mid-September to Leo Tohill, a data base systems analyst for First Union Bank. They met at meetings of SANE, the na tional peace organization. In true “feminist liberation” fashion, Irene will remain ‘Ms. Komor’ after the wedding. Her hobbies during her spare time include reading, hiking, cook- ing, sewing and traveling^. Thus, all one needs to func tion as a Director of Children’s Programs is to be teacher, organizer, coordinator, diplomat, buddy, planner, ex ecutive, mommy, hard worker, philosopher, and, lest we forget, dedicated to children — your children. She is, and we are fortunate for having her. Register for a JCC Class Today Campers clowning around for the camera. Camp Staff putting up tents for the campers.
