Page 16-THE NEWS-September, 1984 Jews and Judalsml Donald Duck Arrives In Israel (Continued from Page 3) As a matter of fact, we Jews have no “guarantee” of a Hereafter. The Rabbis tell us that we must continually have a hope for a Hereafter, but it is onJy within the inscrutable will of God to decide for us on this great matter. Therefore, it behooves us to live oiu* lives from day to day as if we were, and we truly are, the recipients of God’s mercy here on Earth. The rewards that we should reap should not be saved up for another world or life, but rather should be expended in doing good and promoting the happiness and spiritual growth of our fellow men here on Earth, from day to day. One of the questions which very often comes up is con cerned with the Jewish at titude towards the evil and suffering in this world of ours down through the centuries. Some atheists, without ex amining the matter deeply, take the fact that there is cor ruption and evil in the world as proof that there is no God. According to our learned Rab bis, God deliberately made life imperfect in order to give the world a chance to grow towards perfection. “No plan is complete at its inception; the perfection of any plan is visible only at its final development. Thus, much of the evil we see about us, derives from the fact that God’s plan remains unfinish ed.” We are still living in the infancy, so to speak, not only of man, but of the Universe itself. Many Jewish thinkers are convinced that while the world is moving towards greater perfection, towards the Kingdom of God, some im perfections would have to re main, because a world that had no imperfection would lack the force to give incentive of life. Yes, the elimination of the so-called “disturbing elements” from life would leave man with nothing to keep him moving, nothing to make him aspire towards his own improvement and a higher plane of existence. One final word regarding the Jews and their Judaism; While many religions are a matter of pure faith, “Thou Shalt Believe,” Judaism goes far ther. In Judaism, the study of the Word of God comes very close to the sanctity of prayer to God himself. For we hold that a person cannot be a good Jew and be an ignorant Jew. We hold that a person who withholds himself from his fellow Jews, yes, from his fellow community and nation, withholds himseU, to that ex tent, from his God. That is why, 2500 years ago, when an ancient t30’ant asked the great Rabbi Hillel to enunciate the basic principles of Judaism while standing on one foot, this ancient sage simply said, “That which is hateful to thee do not do to others.” This, we believe to be the essence of Judaism. Donald Duck ar rived in Israel on board an El A1 flight from Los Angeles, accom panied by the voice behind the famous cartoon character, Clarence “Ducky’' Nash. Donald Duck and Mr. Nash celebrated the ' bird’s 50th anniver sary in Israel tour ing Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and the Galilee. When ask ed how he found El Al's first class ser vice, Donald Duck responded ‘'superb,*' but he cri^ “fowl” when the main course of the dinner was serv ed; he chose steak instead of chicken.
