From the Desk of Marty Schneer —JCC Executive Director Guest Editorial A Rosh Hashanah Message By Rabbi Robert A. Seigel The High Holy Days are upon us. Another year has somehow whisked by, and we face the shof£u*’s call to admit all our unfulfilled pledges. A year ago we were certam we would accomplish so much. Yet, that year has passed, and many of those things were not done because “we didn’t have time”. Now, again, we have an opportunity to revise priorities and refreshen our perspective on life. These Holy Days press us to reflect on what we have done and what we have not done this past year, where we have not even tried. What have we done this past year to cause us a sense of accomplishment? And what are our goals in the year ahead? How many lives have we touched since last Yom Kippur? In an English murder-mystery, a detective who had spent severed days searching the scene of a crime throws up his hands in disgust. “This is the perfect crime!” he laments. “He didn’t leave a fingerprint!” That also happens to be the perfect crime against life: To go through life without leaving fingerprints gmywhere — without leaving a trace of generosity, a touch of benevolence, a fingerprint of compassion, caring, concern or love. The p>erfect crime against life! These Days of Awe beckon us to change, to become more like the person we want to be. Let this be a year when “I don’t have time” is used judiciously in pur suit of the go£ils we determine for ourselves during the deep introspection of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Let this be a year when all of us leave our fingerprints on life. The members of Temple Beth Shalom join Faye and me in wishing all of you a year of heeJth and content ment, a year of touching the lives of those around us. Ushana tova tikatevu b’sefer chayim: May you be inscribed for a good year in the Book of Life. (Editor’s note: Rabbi Richard Rocklin of Temple Israel, Rab bi Harold Krantzler of Temple Beth El, the sponsoring institu tions of “CJN” — Federation, Foundation, JCC, Hebrew Academy, and the “CJN” Staff also extend their wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.} A Welcome to New Staff Members Over the summer the “CJN” staff has increased. The paper is pleased to welcome volunteers Doris Edelstein and L. Edward Sizemore, a newcomer to Charlotte, as special correspondents; Lottie Goldman and Raenea Siegel who have been helping with Tem ple and Club news; Ted Teitelzweig, who will be assisting in editing and proofing. Monroe Katz, who has returned to Chgirlotte after living in Texas for several months, has volunteered his services once again as our editorial cartoonist. We are happy that Ann eind Monroe decided to come back home. Now that vacation time is rapidly coming to a close and the staff will be doing less traveling, we an ticipate that with their help, the Charlotte Jewish News wiU continue to grow and improve. If you are also interested in dabbling in printer’s ink, just call the editor! As I am sure you are aware, September marks the begirni- ing of JCC Fall Programs. While our two new program directors (Susan Ett - Adult Activities, Irene Komor * Children’s Activities) have on ly been on the job a short time I think you will find they have developed an exciting and diverse schedule of programs and special events from which to choose. The staff has made every effort to find convenient and accessible program sites, as we are of course faced with the continuing problem of limited space. We greatly ap preciate the community’s sup port of our programs during this transition period, and it seems that together we have fostered a heightened spirit of creativity and ingenuity that has.enabled us to effectively deal with new and changing circumstances. The key to our programm ing success now and in the future is the level of participa tion and involvement of the membership. Two events in July clearly illustrated some of what the ‘J’ can accomplish with the support of the membership. Our part-time Athletic Director, Nancy Segal, organized both a Coed Softball Game and Dinner and a Mixed Doubles Tennis Tour nament. In these cases we were able to promote and coor dinate activities which struck a responsive chord in many of our members, resulting in both a recreational and social occa sion for all participants. We feel strongly that it is our role to bring membership together around a variety of formal and informal activities, and we ex pect to function in this capaci ty on a much wider scale when the new ‘J’ opens. If we are to be fully prepared for this task we need to leam from mem- ai/ pp ijiiilimiA III Letters to the Editor Public Officials Promoted Governors Council on Holocaust Is is with a great deal of he£irtfelt appreciation that I publicly thank Jo Graham Foster, Ruth Easterling, Louise Brennan and Senator Marshall Rauch, our represen tatives in the NC House of Representatives and Senate. Each of these public officials have given wholeheeu’tedly to our effort to make the Gover nors Council on the Holocaust a permanent council. The slide program and speakers bureau have been presented to the area school superintendents and hopefully we wiU get a substantial program into our schools. Our endeavor to bring education of this horrible time in history has been closer to a reality due to the efforts of the aforementioned people. It is a pleasure and blessing to know them. May they con tinue in good health in their of fice and allow us the privilege of calling upon them to further our goal. Lest We Forget! Shalom, Celia Scher bers’ experiences in center pro grams. The JCC phase-in pro cess is a very structured and systematic method of plann ing for the future, but we must also gain feedback from the community’s active participa tion in programs leading up to the grand opening. We ask that you either enroll in a pro ven and familiar program this Fall or try something new and different. Hopefully our pro grams wiU not only benefit you personally, broadening your experience or knowledge, but also help to fine-tune our offerings in preparation for our expanded schedule in the future. One new program, worth highlighting and which we are especially excited about, is the J’s After School Care Pro gram. Our Children’s Commit tee and staff have long recognized the need for an After School Program for working parents. We are therefore initiating a program of study and activities for elementary grade children Monday through Friday dur ing the entire school year. The Hebrew Academy has graciously agreed to provide space for this vital new service to the conununity. Specific in- formatioin will be mailed to the membership in the near future. The Jewish Community Center will be moving its en tire operation to the House on the new site by September 15. We are presently involved in negotiations with a Charlotte Tennis Club to provide our members with both a location for Queens City Tennis and courts for open play during most or all hours of the week. We also anticipate obtaining space for our youth soccer pro gram for the public schools or city parks in the area. Further detaUs will be forwarded to our membership prior to the mov ing date. On behalf of the staff and myself I look forward to greeting as many of you as possible at our new temporary home and wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.
