Archbishop Of Milan Pleads
For Purging Of Anti-Semitism
From Theological Literature
ROME (JTA) — Cardinal
Carlo Maria Martini, the Ar
chbishop of Milan, delivered
an impassioned plea for the
purging of anti-Semitism from
theologicEil literature, for pro
moting deeper Christian
understanding of Jewish
religion, culture and tradition
and for Jews and Christians to
join in dialogue with people of
other faiths, notably Moslem.
This was the first time an
Itedian prelate of Martini’s
high rank has made such con
crete suggestions as to steps
to ‘‘dissipate the
misunderstandings that still
make us diffident of real
reciprocal good will” and to
further “a dialogue, a lively
and up to date relationship
with the entire Jewish reality”
because it is “essential to the
Church.”
He said the Church has suf
fered from “being deprived of
help that could have come
from a living Jewish tradition
within the Church.”
Jewish Funeral Service Held
For 500 Who Lived Eight
Centuries Ago
LONDON (JTA) - The re
mains of 500 people who lived
in England eight centuries ago
were reburied recently at York
in a Jewish funeral service.
The bodies, believed to be
mostly of Jews, were reinter
red in a part of the city called
Jewbury, the reputed site of
one of the most important
Jewish cemeteries of medieval
England. The Anglo-Jewish
community had ceased to ex
ist with the expulsion of Jews
from this country in 1290 and
was not revived until 1656
when Oliver Cromwell
authorized the readmission of
Jews to England.
A century before the expul
sion, York had also been the
site of a notorious massacre of
the city’s Jewish community,
many of whom preferred to
take their own lives rather
than die at the hands of their
Christian attackers.
Israel Scientific Probe
To Be On U.S. Space Flight
JERUSALEM (JTA) - A
hornet’s nest will be Israel’s
contribution to a scientific in
vestigation aboard an
American space flight later
this year. It will be the first
time an Israeli medical and
scientific experiment will be
conducted on a U.S. space
vehicle at U.S. expense.
The purpose of the mission
is to advance research into the
human middle ear and its ef
fect on balance. Researchers at
Tel Aviv University have
learned that a species of
hornet prevalent in Israel has
a tiny organ which enables the
insects to maintain balance.
The organ will be analyzed
under conditions of zero gravi
ty in space and the findings
may advance knowledge about
the human bsdancing mecha
nism believed to reside in the
middle ear.

Neo-Nazi Propaganda
Campaign In Germany
Draws Criticism
BONN, (JTA) — A propa

a neo-Nsizi group in the town
of Kassel has drawn a wave of
protests and may end up in
proceedings against two local
newspapers which printed
advertisements of a so-called
“National Front” callings for
the expulsion of foreigners
from this country.
Kassel has been lately the
scene of a major effort of a
group which advocates “direct
action” to clear the country of
“Jews, Turks and American
occupation forces.” In pam

in large numbers, people were
told that “Zionists are the real
brains behind” the alleged
growing phenomenon of Ger

foreign elements.”
