Kudos to the BBYOers who spent the summer in Israel and
shared their experiences with the congregants at Temple Israel
prior to Selichot services. Those in BBYO Discovery group
were Brian Bnick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hy Bruck; Rachel Kaplan,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kaplan; Jodi Mond, daughter of
■ Mr. and Mrs. Irving Mond; Evin Somerstein, son of Dr. and Mrs.
David Somerstein. Barbara Lash, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Lash, was in BBYO Discovery group. Almost 300 teenagers
from the U.S. and Canada visited Israel through the B’nai
B’rith Youth Organization and on their last day they all met
along with other BBYOers from the European countries and
Israel for Maccabean game competition. What a wonderful time
they all had!

Dr. Harry Chemotsky, an assistant professor of political
science, was one of two UNCC professors named thia year’s win
ners of the NCNB Award for Excellence in
Teaching. He received a check for $1,000 and
a plaque from Chancellor E.K. FretweU Jr.
A committee of past recipients picks the win
ners from nominations by school alumni,
students and faculty colleagues. Thirty-six
faculty members have won the award—
financed by NCNB—since the program
began in 1968. Among the previous recip
ients have been Dr. Stephen Fishman and Dr.
Harold Josephson. Chemotsky, 34, who joined UNCC in 1978,
prepares students to compete in the National Model United Na
tions. UNCC students have woii outstanding delegation awards
there in four of the past five years.

It is very significant that
my first article as Director of
Jewish Social Services should
appear during the month of
Tishri, when there is a reaffir
mation of our faith. For it is
also time to reaffirm Jewish
Social Services conmiitment
to the Jewish elderly and their
families in our conmiunity.
In the near future a geriatric
needs assessment will be com
ing to each of you. I ask your
cooperation in returning this
to me. In this way, I can deter
mine where time and energies
should be spent to help pro
vide the services our elderly
and their families feel are lack
ing or need to be stressed.
Before the survey can be
completed, I ask your assist
ance in contacting me person
ally if you are aware of a prob
lem an elderly person is ex
periencing. Because I am new
to the Charlotte area, I am try
ing to leam the community
and its members. This takes
time, and I would like to avoid
missing anyone who could use
our help.
In the short time I have
been Director, I have been im
pressed with the warmth and
caring of the Jewish commun
ity for its members. It is such
a climate that helps create the
necessity for Jewish Social
Services.
Jewish Social Services has
three major components: Serv
ing the elderly person and
their families; providing
counseling for the unemployed
or vocationally distress^ per
son; and referral or assistance
for persons experiencing emo
tional stress in their lives. All
services are confidential.
Adrienne Rosenberg, Social
Service Director.
The phone number for
Jewish Social Services is now
364-6594. The hours are 9-5,
Monday through Friday.
