Newcomers Welcomed At Shalom Y*all
**University Experience** Planned
BIu Greenberg To Speak

On Sept. 6, a meeting for
newcomers was held at the
home of Sharon Sand, cochair
woman of Women’s Division’s
Shalom Y’All committee. The
guests were welcomed by Gail
Bienstock, president, who in
troduced the other members of
the committee: Susan Sachs,
cochairwoman; Carol Wald-
man and Helene Nathanson.
Gail explained that the pur
pose of the Shalom Y’All even
ing is to give newcomers a
chance to become familiar
with the Jewish conmiunity.
She also spoke briefly about
the fall/winter programs.
Representatives of various
Jewish organizations were
also present. Allen Gordon,
president of Temple Beth El,
described the Temple and its
programs, His wife, Ethel,
spoke about the Temple’s
sisterhood, describing it as, “a
service org£inization for the
Temple, whose purpose is to
promote comaraderie and offer
educational experiences.”
Beth Lindermen spoke
about B’nai B’rith Women as
both a service and a social
organization. Carol Waldman
shared her first impressions of
Charlotte and gave informa
tion about the Hebrew
Academy. Representing Ha*
dassah was Dieuie Rosenberg,
who offered a summary of the
orgeuiization’s activities.
Marvin Bienstock, director
of the Jewish Federation and
Foundation of Charlotte, ex
plained the formation of the
Foundation.
The following new Charlot-
teans were introduced:
Faith and Ed Sizemore, who
moved here from Colorado in

April, have lived in many
states. Both like Ch£u*lotte
very much.
Ilene and Neil Burstein also
have been here since April.
Originally from New York,
they moved here from
Portland, Oregon. Neil, who
was transferred by his com
pany, is with Freightliner
Corp. The Bursteins have two
children, Jessica, 8, and Mat
thew, 5. “We like Charlotte,”
said Ilene. “We enjoy the
warm, sunny weather. The
people are very friendly and
the size of the town is good.
We’re glad we’re here.”
John and Sandy Burtoft also
attended. This was their se
cond Shalom Y'All...they liked
it so much the first time they
came back again.
The evening concluded with
the group chatting informally
while enjoying coffee and
delicious desserts prepared by
the committee.

Professor Blu Greenberg, a
leading voice in the Jewish
Women’s Liberation Move
ment, and a fuU day’s program
at UNCC make up the “Uni
versity Experience” planned
for the last week in October by
the Women’s Division of the
Charlotte Jewish Federation.
Professor Greenberg has
written that “...the Jewish
woman is now four thousand
years old; whether she has yet
come of age is still a matter of
debate.” Her controversial
views on Judaism and
feminism, with emphasis on
Orthodox and Conservative
Judaism, will be the focus for
discussion at Temple Israel on
Monday evening, Oct. 29* at
7:30 p.m. Dr. Greenberg is the
author of On Women and
Judaism: A View From Tradi
tion, published in 1983.
Her education and profes
sional experience are extensive
and varied. Dr. Greenberg has
a Ph.D. from Columbia Uni
versity, Department of
Religion. She attended the
Yeshiva University Revel
Graduate School of Jewish
Studies where she received a
masters degree in clinical
psychology from City Univer
sity. Her bachelor’s degree in
religious education is from the
Yeshiva University Teachers
Institute.
Her professional experience
includes being an instructor at
the College of Mount Saint
Vincent, Department of
Religious Studies and a
theology faculty member of
the Institute for Women To
day. She has also been on the
board of the National Jewish
Welfare Agency and an ex
ecutive board member of the
Jewish Book Council.
She has lectured and writ
ten, extensively, on a variety
of topics centered around
Jewish life. Her articles have
been published in Hadassh
Magazine, Judaism, Tradition,
The Ecumenist, Moment,
Midstream, and The Jewish
Spectator.
Blu Greenberg is the wife of
Irving Greenberg, an eminent
Orth^ox rabbi, and is the
mother of five children.
University Day Agenda
The University Experience
will continue with a trip to
UNCC on Wednesday, Oct. 31,
from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Par
ticipants in the program wiU
leave by bus from Cotswold
Shopping Center at 9 a.m. They
will be welcomed at the
University by R. Oakley
Winters, Director of the Con
tinuing Education Depart
ment of the University, who is
coordinating the program with
the Education committee of
Blu Greenberg
Women’s Division. Emily Zim-
mern, chairperson of the com
mittee, will also be there to
welcome their arrivial.
Chancellor E.K. Fretwell Jr.
will bring greetings.
The focus of the day’s pro
gram will be lectures and
discussions led by noted facul
ty members exploring a
number of issues from a
Jewish perspective.
Dr. Joel Shatzky, play
wright and visiting professor
of Jewish-American Literature
from Cortland State (State
University of N.Y. system),
will lead-off the morning ses
sion. Dr. Harold Josephson,
director of the Center for In
ternational Studies and presi
dent of the Jewish Communi
ty Center, will discuss “U.S.
Foreign Policy and the Jewish-
American Voter.”
A special luncheon will
feature Dr. Schley Lyons, na
tionally known political scien
tist, and his assessment of
“Electorial Politics 1984: An
ticipating November 6.” He
wiU focus on election trends in
the Presidential and North
Carolina Senate races since
World War II. The program
wiU conclude with the Opera
Workshop’s performance of
operatic and Broadway
musical selections.

Experience is $12.50 per per
son. This includes both Blu
Greenberg’s presentation and
the full University Day pro
