STEP is a program designed to enhance inter-family communication. The nine STEP sessions con sider these topics: 1. Ways to build positive relationships with children; goals of mis behavior 2. Importance of emo tions and life style; the “good” parent 3. Encouragement; building the child’s confidence 4. Communication; listening to the child 5. Exploring alter natives; expressing your ideas and feelings to children 6. Natural and logical consequences as an alter native to rewards and punishment 7. Applications of natural and logical conse- '^quences to typical ' challenges posed by ' children 8. Ways to establish regular family meetings. 9. Ways to develop your own confidence and potential The Jewish Community Center is pleased to cosponsor this eight-week course with the Charlotte Drug Education Center. Their staff person, Helen Harrill, will facilitate the STEP program. The course runs Wednesday even ings, October 24 through December 19, from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Drug Education Center, 1416 East Morehead (in the Pfeiffer College Building). On Sunday, Nov. 4 from 2-6 p.m., the Jewish Conununity Center will host an open house in honor of Jewish Book, Month. Afternoon activities' will include a storytelling festival, songs and book display and re^shments. The center will be taking orders for an interesting assortment of Jewish Books. This exciting event, will interest both young and old alike. The Armstrong House, 921 Jefferson Drive, will be the home of the Center until the new building is completed. Come tour the “J’s” new home and see the prog^ss on the ' building site. Watch your mail for further details on this up coming event. School’s Out-JCC’s In Everyone knows that a cou ple days away from school is a treat for kids. Unfortunate ly, many adults are not able to take time away from their jobs to enjoy the students’ days off. That’s where the JCC comes in. To make your children’s mini-vacation a holi day, the J is offering a mini camp. Starting Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4 with a “Storytelling Festival,” lasting through Wednesday, Nov. 7, which is Safety Day, the JCC is plan ning a lot of learning and even more fun! Phase>In Institute Jenier The Chai Group kicked off this Fall with their annual Raf fle. The Raffle was a huge suc cess, thanks to the overwhelm-' ing support of the conununity. Herman Blumenthal was the winner of a beautiful afghan which was hand-made by Chai member Sylvia Sadoff. Joyce Mabel was the winner of a dynamic signed print by Charlotte Artist 6.G. Kosch. The group’s plans for this Fall indude a lecture series on Great Religions of the World, speakers on various political and social topics, and a lunch/movie afternoon. Fall Celebration The JCC Fall Celebration at Latta Plantation Park was wonderful! September 23 was an ideal, sunny day. Children and their parents, in pairs £ind groups, toured a pine-laden, tree- shaded nature trail near Mountain View Lake. Emerg ing on a grassy slope, they threw frisbees or footballs or horseshoes, or sat in the shade, relaxing and talking. When it was time to eat picnic-baskets and coolers full of food and drink were unload ed onto the tables at the reserved shelter. Sports Corner SOCCER NEWS Soccer season is underway and tl^ JCC teams are lock ing very good. We have two teams (Under lO's and Under 12’s) playing in the Methodist Home Parks League this fall (>ur team coaches are Alan Kronovet, Larry Segal and Sid Doobrow. If your youngster wcjits to join us but missed the op portunity to play this fall, we be playing soccer again in the spring. Watch for registration announcements as the new season approaches. YOUTH BASKETBALL Our winter Youth Basketball program wiU be starting soon. Call the JCC (366-0357) to get details and to put your child’s name on our teams.
