A nn i edited by Marta Garelik WUKIjI.) liHiAl ^ — U.S. Grants Help Israeli Alzheimer Research NEW YORK (JTA) - Two grants have been made by American organizations to ad vance the study of identifica tion and treatment of Alzhei mer’s Disease at the Jeru salem Mental Health Center- Ezrath Nashim’s Department of Geriatric Research. The grants wiU help to fund work now proceeding under Dr. Richard Ebstein, Geriatric Research Director. Three fac tors underline the research rationale. First, Ebstein has found that his Alzheimer’s patients show one or smother of three biochemical abnormalities of the brain. Second, a special report of the Nation^ In stitute on Aging pointed to a relationship between Alzhei mer’s Disease and decreased activity of an importeint brain enzyme. Third, other researcher ac tivities support these findings and show that parts of the brain which meike or use these enzymes show many degenera tive changes. The Americein Friends said that the ultimate goal of the research is to reverse the ef fects of Alzheimer’s Disease through a biochemical ap proach, to correct specific ab normalities or deficiencies in the brain. Kfir Fighters To Be Used By U.S.A. TEL AVIV (JTA) - The state-owned Israel Aircraft In dustries (lAI) handed over to the U.S. Navy the first three of 12 Israeli-designed and built Kfir fighters, to be used by the Americans for training purposes. The dozen aircraft are being leased to the U.S., with the balance of nine planes to be delivered at the rate of three a month from the beginning of next year. The Israeli Kfirs will be used by U.S. Navy pilots to simulate enemy air craft in training for air battles. A team of U.S. Navy pilots are in Israel training to use the aircraft, and 15 lAI techni cians will be going to the U.S. to help maintain and service the Kfirs there. Israel To Export New Fruit TEL AVIV (JTA) - Israeli farmers are preparing to ex port two new fruits they have now started harvesting — Umes and red bananas. Limes are newcomers to this country, and do not even have a special name in Hebrew. The red bananas now being harvested in Kibbutz Ginossar near Tiberias are from plants imported from Ecuador, where they are grown by Indian tribes. Special Bar Mitzvah Celebrated CLEVELAND (JTA) - The Bar Mitzvah of a son and his father marked a “first” for Congregation Beth-Aynu, a Conservative congregation in Beechwood, Ohio. But the double rite for Rory Rubin and his father, Richard Rubin, had another unusual meaning for the Shaker Heights Family. They were also “twinned” in a proxy Bar Mitzvah with Karmi and Lev Elbert of Kiev, a proxy ceremony to dramatize the contrast between the freedom in which the Rubins can fulfill their Judaism and the oppres sion under which Karmi Elbert and his father are denied that opportunity. Lev Elbert, a Prisoner of Conscience, is in a prison in the Soviet Union, separated from his family. A letter from Rory Rubin, in English and in Russian, was mail^ to Karmi, who lives with his mother in Kiev. It was mailed from Moscow by a tourist. Major Counterfeit Ring Busted TEL AVIV (JTA) - Police in Israel and the U.S. have un covered a major counterfeit ring and seven men were ar rested here while in the act of printing $12 million worth of $100 bills. Police spokesmen said the bills they had found were of excellent quality, among the best counterfeits they had TUB ever seen. They would even pass the test of the expensive small dollar testing electronic machines now popular in Israel because of the plague of counterfeit currency on sale on the black market. The counterfeiters were so taken by surprise by the police raid that they did not have Hmft to turn off the small press and the fake dollars, in sheets of six bills to a sheet, con tinued to flow out of the press as the police detained the suspects. One of them was quoted by police as saying: “How could you be such sadists? We work ed so hard at printing. You could at least have stopped us before we started work.” The tip-off for the operation appears to have come from the U.S. some months ago, when reports of a major counterfeit operation by Israelis surfaced. Both Israeli and American police have been keeping a careful watch on the gangs at both ends since then. Meanwhile, in New York the United States Secret Service announced the arrest of three men in Brooklyn who were connected with the Israeli counterfeiting ring. James D’Amellio, a U.S. Secret Service special agent, who coordinated the raids with the Israeli National Police, said that Secret Service agents arrested Avraham Batashvilli, 52, and his sons Michael, 22, and Irshak, 26. The Batashvillis are Soviet Georgian emigres and are related to the seven Georgian emigres who were seized in Israel. IDF To Thieves: Present Arms TEL AVIV (JTA) - The Israel Defense Force had a month-long bid to retrieve an estimated $250 million worth of military equipment report ed missing and believed to be in the hands'of civilians and army reservists. During this time no disciplinary measures were taken under a special “amnesty” granted to any per son turning over any military equipment in their possession. Australian Press Council Upholds Complaint About AntiSemitic Cartoon MELBOURNE (JTA) - In a precedent-setting ruling, the Australian Press Council has upheld a complaint against a leading national weekly newspaper for publishing an anti-Semitic cartoon last May. The complaint was brought by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) against The National Times after a fuU-page cartoon was published depicting a satanic cloven-hoofed rabbi slicing, with one hand, an infant into pieces against a background of a crescent moon dripping blood. With the other hand, the figure was dropping a bomb on a mosque. In his defense, the car toonist said he did not intend to be anti*Jewish, but was referring specifically to Rabbi Meir Kahane, since elected to the Knesset, who weis men tioned in the article. Unemployment Increases In Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) - The number of unemployed in Israel increased by about 1,400 between July and August but the main problem is not joblessness but diffi culty matching workers to the kinds of jobs they want. Many young men refuse jobs in construction and agriculture. It is very difficult to convince people to work in such branches as construction, metallurgies, agriculture and automobile mechanics. Half the jobs offered are fill ed by Arab workers from the occupied territories. About 80,000 Arabs from the ter ritories presently work in Israel. RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — Eliahu Tabori, the Israeli Consul General in Rio, was made honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro State in recognition of the fact that he “mastered the Portuguese language in the short time he has lived in Brazil,” less than a year. Tabori received the honorary certificate of citizenship from the President of the State Assembly, Paulo Ribeiro, at a ceremony in the building that houses the legislature. • SANTIAGO (JTA) - Jew ish religious education will become optional for Chilean primary and secondciry school pupils, according to a new law enacted here, the Latin American branch of the World Jewish Congress reported. The law specified that the program seeks “to apply the concepts of Jewish ethics, morality and philosophy in daily life, teaching how to love and respect one’s neighbor like oneself, learning self-content ment and self-enhancement. There are about 20,000 Jews in Chile. • LONDON (JTA) - Two British Jews, David Young and Stanley Clinton Davis, have been given senior political appointments by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. • WASHINGTON (JTA) - The Senate appropriations committee has unanimously adopted an amendment by Sen. Alan Cranston (D. Calif.) that U.S. economic aid to Israel never be less than the total of the interest and prin cipal Israel pays the U.S. on its annual debt. The rule has a five-year limit. The amend ment will be part of the con tinuing resolution of the 1985 budget which includes $2.6 billion for Israel. • JERUSALEM (JTA) - A Trauma Research Center, believed to be the largest of its kind in the world, has been established at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School. The staff of 100 researchers will study various aspects of trauma caused by injuries in military and civilian life. V •!
