Page 8-THE NEWS-November, 1984 This That Stacey Schefflin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marty Schefflin, defeated Winston-Salem’s Spencer Barnes 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in the recent singles final for the Seventeen magazine national tennis tournament. Both players qualified for the N.C. junior Wrightman Cup team. • Scott Meltsner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meltsner, a senior at Charlotte Country Day, has been named a National Merit semi-finalist. Adam Cohen, son of Melville Cohen and Ruth Cohen, a senior at East Mecklenburg High School, has made National Merit Commended. • Though some of the following college students have since graduated and are either in the work field or doing graduate studies, they still should be commended for doing outstanding work during the past spring semester; the others are back at school, working diligently (?) so they can be mentioned in this column again in a few months. Those at UNCC who made straight A's: Beverly Montezinos; Miriam Spitzer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Spitzer; Scott Gay nor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gaynor. Making the Chancellor’s list at UNCC were: Lee Nadelman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nadelman; Robin Oxer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Oxer. Erica Portnoy, daughter of Gil Portnoy, has been named to the dean’s list at Ohio State University, Columbus. The following students were named to the deari’s list at UNC: Elizabeth Ely, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jamas Ely; Michael Newman, son of Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Newman; Stuart Oxer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Oxer; Ira Shapiro, son of Dr. and Mrs. Arnold Shapiro; Benjamin Sutker, son of Stephen Sutker and Judy Sutker; Mark Portnoy, son of Gil Portnoy; Lisa Schwartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Schwartz; Debbie Tager, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Tager. Named to UNC-G’s dean’s list was: Cynthia Farbman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Farbman. • Mark Sherwin, son of Roslyn She'rwin, has been attending Campbell U. this year on scholarship. • Among the civilians to receive hero awards from the Ch£irlotte Police Department was Glen Kornhauser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kornhauser. Hunt (R) recently welcomed Rabbi Yoseph Groner (O Director of Lubavitch of North Carolina, and Senator Marshall Rauch (L) Chairman of Lubavitch of N.C., at his office. The Governor praised the work of Lubavitch and said, “It is wonderful to see you reach out to the Jewish people and bring them back to the fundamentals of Judaism, especially since it is done with love/’ He also emphasized the common goals he shares with Lubavitch in promoting proper education for all people. Rabbi Groner opened the state legislative session at the Senate with a prayer. Rabbi Groner presented the National Scroll of Honor to Governor Hunt. The Scroll was signed by all the members of Congress, Vice President Bush and President Reagan in honor of Rebbe Menachem M. Schneerson.
