Because if it were all gone you won’t have any cute furry things to pet and play with at night.” For a second I thought. Rare Animal: Deer By Shara Steiner “Hi! I’m a deer. My name is Carry Michelle Deer. I live in a rain forest. Here the people are coming again; they’re go ing to kill me. Won’t they ever leave me alone? Sometimes I tell them that in the Bible it says: ‘Do not kill.’ But they never listen. They say, ‘It’s fun to kill, and we wUl keep trying to kill you until you are dead!’ “Other animals try to kiU me, like tigers, wolves arid foxes. I see other animals get ting killed. What am I worth to those hunters? I’m just an animal who is in the woods and I didn’t do anything to them. So why are they trying to kill me? We are all created from G-d, and we are' all created for a purpose. Maybe when I get older I could be famous, or maybe I could be used for something very helpful. “So please don’t kill me. They usually say, ‘We have no mercy for what we hunt.’ And I say, ‘I could help you when you get hurt or maybe another animal is trying to kill you.’ “They never listened,” said the young deer. “My Mom got killed by those awful hunters. I cry now and then. I hope that the hunters never kill me!” JSS Vocation Applicants Call 364-6594 or 366-5007 if you have a position open for them. They, for example, learn about such philosophical topics as: (1) the justification for punishment, (2) the extent to which one should help the poor and others in need, (3) obligations to one’s parents and children and (4) whether and under what conditions killing is justifiable. Finally, the day school children learn a foreign Dolls For Democracy “Dolls for Democracy,” a national program of B’nai B’rith Women and Charlotte BBW, is designed to bring to ■ the attention of primarily school age children some of the outstanding men and women who have added to the world’s sum of truth, beauty and goodness. These people of the past and present are of every religion, creed, color, na tionality, group and social class. Through their per sonalities and work, they demonstrated vividly that talent, genius, devotion to democratic ideals, and service to mankind are not the characteristics of any single group of people. When we tell the life story of these dolls, two fundamental principles of democracy are emphasized. These are the worth and dignity of every human being and that society owes every individual full and equal opportunity to develop his known and unknown potential. Our dolls have been design ed to recapture in face and dress the individual they represent. Each person de picted is one, who, by reason of his or her own feeling of love for mankind, has strengthen ed ties of understanding and cooperation among all peoples everywhere. We encourage any in terested parent to bring this program to the attention of his/her child’s teachers. The day school pupils not only learn Hebrew, but view it as a vehicle into Jewish culture. It is not being suggested, of course, that day school educa tion is a substitute for a good humanities education in col lege. What is being argued, in stead, is that a Hebrew day school education could result in providing students with a good foundation for a humani ties education in later years. It is true, of course, that many parents send their children to Jewish day schools because they want their children to be proud of being Jewish and comfortable in their Judaism. There is, of course, nothing wrong with this motivation. But parents might consider the quality of the humanities education that their children will receive as an additional reason for choosing a Jewish day school education. In short, paradoxical as it may seem to some, a Jewish day school education (at least in a Conservative or a Reform Jewish setting) is a worldly and not a parochial experience. % Helga and Hugo Rosenberger having just received the Bon Gurion Award presented by Morris Speizman (at podium).
