Giggling with excitement: Sloane Muller, winner of the
> Third Annual Family Afikomen Hunt, is shown with the
Incite encased Afikomen. Cosponsored by the Federation and
the JCC, almost 50 youngsters solved the clues in the
Charlotte Jewish News to uncover the Biblical hiding place
of the first part of the HUNT. The solution was the TOWER
OF BABEL.
Having become first round winners, the children gathered
at the Armstrong House on June 2 at noon. When the signal
was given, they and their families spread out to hunt for the
real Afikomen hidden in the grassy picnic area adjacent to
the parking lot. It took 7 minutes and 22 seconds for Sloane
Muller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Muller, a student
at the Hebrew Academy, to uncover the hiding place at the
base of a tree. Her prize is a TV set. For each of the first
round winners there were Certificates of Achievement and
wishes for good luck in the 4th Annual Family Afikomen
Hunt to be held next spring at our new facility.

By Gail Bienstock
Sponsored by the Women's
Division of the Charlotte
Jewish Federation, 19 “Jewish
working women” have launch
ed a Jewish Book Club on
June 30. Margie Goldstein
hosted the evening.
The group discussed Paul
Cowan’s, “An Orphan in
History.” Mr. Cowan had ad
dressed Women’s Division
Pacesetters at a dinner earlier
this year. Leslie Winner focus
ed the group’s attention on
such issues as: the importance
of roots to current identity,
the possibility for cultural/
ritual identity without a
spiritual component, the
balance between private and
communal religious experi
ences, the importance of
attending an Episcopal prep
school and enduring overt
anti-Semitism as a name-only-
Jew, marrying a non-Jew, and
Cowan’s need to search for
roots.
Over the course of the
discussion, regional dif
ferences in experience and as
a shaping process were ex
plored, ie, was Cowan propel
led forward in his search in
part because he lived in a
liberal, young professional
Jewish community? Are
Southern Jewish women from
small towns more self-
conscious and/or more com
mitted as Jews than their
Northern metropolitan
counterparts?
On August 18 the group wiU
react to Victor Frankel’s
“Man’s Search for Meaning.”
Other books to be explored
this year include “Night” by
Eli Wiesel and “Jewish and
Female” by Susan Schneider
Widerman.
