Page 16-THE NEWS-September, 1985 Teen Suicide: A Crisis On The Rise By Susan Coen Do you know what the following warning signals mean? Decline in school work, unusual neglect of personal ap pearance, withdrawal from friends and families, change of eating and sleeping habits, complaints of physical symp toms, i.e.: stomachaches, headaches, fatigue and persis tant boredom. According to the American Academy of Child Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Asso ciation these are some warning signals of adolescent suicide. Did you know that teenage suicide is now the number one leading cause of death among young people aged fifteen to twenty-four years. The adoles cent suicide rate has tripled over the last thirty years. Ac cording to many studies the suicides are thought to be the result of increasing and decreasing support from families and society. Most parents who have survived their child committing suicide have stated “this could never happen to me!” On October 9, at Temple Beth El sanctuary, from 7 to 9 p.m., Alexis Stein and Howard Winokuer, from TO LIFE, will present a program on Teenage Suicide. B’nai B’rith Women, Charlotte Chapter, is sponsoring the pro- Books In Review con’t from p.8 namely Wouk’s gifts as a story teller, a warmth and remarkable sense of humor that are wholly captivating. Characters and sequences fre quently burst into joyous life. Wouk’s long but absorbing dramatization of Goodkind’s immigrant parents and grand parents adjusting to America, the youth’s career at Columbia College, and his apprentice ship to a precariously suc cessful and garishly flam boyant gag writer in the 30s are all permeated with a sense of time, place and feeling that is both accurate and enthral ling. A Big Band Kaddish indeed. Mr. Wouk eventually has us swaying and stomping to his music. Dance. Read. Enjoy. • Benjamin Nelson, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Fairleigh Dickin son University, has written books on Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. r' I I I I I I I I^IWY.SIPtNEV M^mm COUPON must accompany order > 50% DISCOUNT ALL DRY CLEANING Silk Not Included Min. 5.00 ORDER AFTER DISCOUNT B-KLEEN CLEANERS & LAUNDRY 1 DRIVE-THRU WINDOWS Watch for Opening of Albemarle Store BEAUTIFUL SHIRTS-SOUTHEAST CHARLOTTE'S FINEST COUNTIYSiOC SHOfflNGCBnB HWY.SIPtNEVUE SOUTHFARK MATTHEWS ly/IAHHEWS SHARON 9710 MONROE RO.
