Senator Rudy Boschwitz (R.
Minnesota) was one of the
featured speakers at a celebra
tion in Minneapolis which
commemorated the 850th bir
thday of the great medieval
Talmudist, codifier, philoso
pher and physician, Rabbi
Moshe ben Maimon, better
known as the Rambam or
Maimonides, and the comple
tion of the Rambam’s Mishna
Torah bv members of Min
nesota’s Lubavitch communi
ty.
The Senator found some
parallels from Medmonides’
life to his own. “We both fled
the countries of our birth
because of religious persecu
tion - he, Spain; I, Germany.
And we both rose to some pro
minence in the countries which
welcomed us - he, Egypt; I, the
United States of America, this
blessed country. Both of us
Jews - yet we serve all of our
countrymen equally, the Ram
bam as a physician and I as a
Senator.”
Boschwitz pointed out that
in Maimonides’ Mishna Torah
‘‘he not only codifies the Cove
nant which G-d made with the
Israelites at Sinai, he also
codifies the seven statutes of
the Covenant which G-d made
with Noah and his children in
Genesis which is relevant for
all mankind to this very day
and to which President
Reagan has referred.”
The celebration was spon
sored by Friends of Merkos-
Lubavitch, of which Senator
Boschwitz is Chairman.

Marta Garelik was born in
Vienna, Austria, and arrived
in the U.S. shortly before
World War II. Marta makes a
fascinating friend. She is an
extremely busy person with in
numerable interests including
editing the “World Beat” col
umn each month for the Char
lotte Jewish News and taking
an active part in the Senior
Scholars. In the past, Marta’s
varied concerns have included
being an attorney in Vienna
and owning a sweater factory
in New York. In fact, Lana
Turner and many other movie
stars modeled and owned
dozens of Marta’s sweaters.
Yours Truly Needlepoint
and Sweaters by Patty are ex
tremely privileged to have
Marta as a volunteer. Our
troubleshooter for problems
with knitting and crocheting,
Marta helps customers in our
shop every Thursday at 3802
