Page 13-THE NEWS-February, 1986 Xcitiplcs To PiTcscfit Sp6cial A.dult Education Pirogi*aitis Beth El Sponsors Shabbat Forums Israel To Hold First **People Power” Weekend Temple Beth El is presenting an adult Jewish education pro gram, consisting of a series of five forums, which will be open to the entire Jewish community. At the regular Friday even ing services, Rabbi Harold Krantzler will outline the short biblical books (five Mfegillot) associated with the Jewish festivals as an introduction to the forums. They are scheduled as follows: Feb. 14 - “The Song of Songs” (Passover) Leader: Barbara Huberman, consul tant/trainer, on “Contemporary Sexuality." Feb. 21 - “The Book of Ruth” (Shavuot) Leader: Kelly Alexander Jr., President of N.C. Chapter of the NAACP, on “Black-Jewish Relations.” Feb. 28 - “Ecclesiastes” (Sukkot) Leaders: Alexis Stein and Howard Winokuer of TO LIFE, on “Burnout, Stress, Death and Dying.” Mar. 7 - “Lamentations” (Tisha B’av) Leader: Rev. Clifford Jones Sr., pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church, on “TTie Disadvan taged — Here in Charlotte and All Over the World.” Mar. 14 - “The Book of Esther” (Purim) Leader: Dr. Jay Robinson, Superintendent of Schools, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, on “The Pro blems of Church and State in our Public Schools.” Temple Israel is busily preparing fmd planning its first “People Power” weekend to be held February 14-16. During the weekend’s ac tivities, there will be a chance for the congregation to not on ly observe Judaism, but to participate in it. Many of our congregants, young and old, will have the opportunity to showcase their too oft hidden talents as they lead sabbath services. Another exciting aspect of the weekend will be presenta tions by a Scholar-In- Residence, Michael Andron. Mr. Andron’s realm of study and expertise ranges from Judo to Jewish mysticism. He is the founder and director of the Institute for Bio-Balemce (North Carolina-Tel Aviv), an educational/research firm in mind-body effectiveness train ing. He leads corporate workshops in “Stress Manage ment and Personal Energy Ef fectiveness, ” utilizing non physical techniques drawn from his extensive training in oriental disciplines. He is the religious leader/teacher of the Kodesh Congregation in Winston-Salem and is a rab- binically ordained Mohel and a graduate of Yeshiva University. The weekend will begin with an early sabbath service on Friday evening followed by sabbath dinner. This format will allow for a more relaxed and socied dinner. At 8:30 p.m. Mr. Andron will present “Jewish Karate, Jewish Meditation, What’s Next?” There will be supervised children’s activities during Mr. Andron’s presentations. Saturday’s activities begin with a congregationally-led service followed by Rabbi Wilson’s famous cholent. At 4 p.m. Mr. Andron will give an experiential presentation “A Magical Mystery Tour Through Judaism.” At 5 p.m. there will be Min- cha/Shalushudes and 6:30 p.m., Havdalah (a light meal. singing and service). But the happenings don’t stop with the sabbath. After a 9 a.m. Tallis ’n Tefillin service on Sunday, there will be a special Awards Breakfast to honor “a congregant or con gregants” who have given outstanding service to the synagogue. The weekend promises many opportunities for fellowship, participation emd pride in each other and in a rich Jewish heritage. As with all of Temple Israel’s activities, guests are always welcome.
