Mierbach Graf Von Spee, Mayor of Korschenbroich, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, admitted that he told the town council’s budget committee that a few rich Jews should be slain in order to get the budget bal anced. Korschenbroich has a population of about 27,000. Von Mierbach apologized for his remark but added that talk about killing rich Jews was widely used in the past when discussing financial mat ters. The opposition Social Democratic Party (SPD) im mediately called on the Mayor to resign. The Jewish com munity in Dusseldorf an nounced it has filed suit against him for racial incite ment. Outrage was expressed when Hermann Felner, a rank ing member of the Christian Social Union, the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, stated publicly that Jews who seek reparations from German finns that used them as slave laborers during World War II created the impression that “Jews are quick to show up when money jingles in Ger man cashboxes.” Felner, too, apologized both in the Bundestag and in a for mal statement to the Jewish community. But the matter resurfaced when the weekly Der Spiegel quoted Chancdlor Kohl as saying that Felner’s remark was not anti-Semitic and that it reflected the at titude of most Germans. The NC B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation is pleased to report to you that, thanks to your support, we have active Hillel programs going on at Duke University, University of NC at Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, Guilford College and University of NC at Greensboro. Our staff, which includes Rabbi Frank A. Fischer, Director; Rina Sky Wolfgang; Director of Student Activities; Rabbi Bonnie Kop- pel, advisor at ECU, and Phyllis Goldman, advisor at Guilford College and UNC-G, have all been working hard to develop good programming for their students. At ECU, Rabbi Bonnie Kop- pel has organized bagel brunches, Israeli folk dancing and an interfaith seder for the spring. In February, Phyllis Goldman organized a Jewish Awareness Week at her cam pus. Our big highlight for the month of February, however, was our Scholar-in-Residence program. This was sponsored by our State office in Chapel Hill in cooperation with the American Zionist Youth Foun dation. Mr. Gideon Lowy, the Assistant Managing Editor and News Editor for Ha’Aretz, a prominent Israeli newspaper, spoke at classes at Duke and UNC-CH. He was also a guest of the Greenville, Raleigh and Greensboro com munities during his stay in NC from Feb. 10-24. We are also continuing with our outstanding social, cultural and religious pro gramming on all of our cam puses. Our goal is to serve the Jewish college community of North Carolina as best as we can.
