Director of Youth Services
We are slowly beginning to
“rev up” for the opening of the
new blading. During January
the “J” sponsored three very
successful events for the com
munity. Our single parent and
child afternoon was well at
tended. The children worked
on a small project and then
prepared snacks for their
parents. We enjoyed being
together and have planned
several other afternoons of
fun. Please call the Center if
you would like to have your
name added to our mailing list.
Thanks go to the 7th-9th
graders who attended the
“smooze & nosh” on January
26. Your input on programs
for the new building was very
helpful. The group composed
of 26 vibrant young people,
decided that they would like to
meet on a bi-monthly basis
and I am in the process of
planning our next event. The
group also decided that we
should form a “tween council”
that wiU coordinate and plan
coming events. At the next
meeting we will elect council
members.

As the time grows near for
our grand opening, the JCC is
moving ahead in its plans for
many activities involving all
our members. Registration is
now underway for our youth
soccer teams (ages 6-14).
These teams will be competing
in the city-wide YMCA
leagues. If you or anyone you
know is interested in represen
ting the Center on these teams
please give me a call as soon as
possible; the league play starts
the end of M£u*ch. We are also
in need of volunteer coaches
and aides to assist us in this
endeavor.
'Mark the dates July 17-21.
That is the week the JCC will
again play host to approx
imately 100 young athletes
from Caracas, Venezuela. Our
experience in the past was so
enjoyable that we have ex
tended this return invitation.
They will be stopping here on
their way to Toronto, Canada
to compete in the World
Youth Maccabi Games.
The Charlotte JCC is very
interested in having represen
tation in Toronto for this gala
event. All Jewish athletes bet
ween the ages of 12 and 16 are
eligible to apply. I hope to
have more information in a
few weeks as to the events we
would be in competition.
In order to successfully par
take in the above mentioned
activities, your help will be
greatly appreciated. We are
looking for volunteer coaches,
housing and hospitality people
and overall planning commit
tee people. If you are in
terested in any of these pro
grams please caU me at the
“J”, 366-0357.

Club 23 got off to a fresh
start on February 2. Members
participated in an afternoon of
activities with a “Groundhog

created winter/spring mobiles,
decorated groundhog cup
cakes and then selected ac

It was a dark and frosty
Saturday morning when 25
hearty Pizazz Jewish Singles
piled on board a chartered bus
and headed out for a success
ful day of skiing in the North
Carolina mountains.
The bus departed South-
Park Mall February 1, even
before the sun came up. Once
on the road, the sleepy-eyed
skiiers waited for the dawn
and then munched on a break
fast of doughnuts, muffins,
coffeecake and juice to help
them get through the three-
hour bus ride to Beech Moun
tain. The bus wound around
narrow mountain roads to the
Banner Elk resort where
skiiers, from beginners to ad
vanced, took to the slopes for
a day of downhill. Some took
lessons and made their very
first runs down the “bunny”
hills.
By five o’clock, everyone
was exhausted but happy.
Fortunately no one was in
jured, only an occasional
bruised ego where someone
had fallen and couldn’t get
back up.
A brief stop for dinner and
then back to SouthPark where
good-byes were said before go
ing home to nurse sore mus
cles.
