Tax Preparation Services Are Now Available Completing tax forms is a tedious and difficult task for just about everybody. But it can be even more frustrating and confusing for older people who find themselves in new situations after retirement. AARP’s Tax-Aide service of fers free nationwide tax counseling, primsirily for older persons, but for other persons, also. Last year done more than 22,000 volunteers sup ported the program. They helped arrange neighborhood counseling sites where older persons live, work and socialize. They helped train their peers in cooperation with the U.S. Internal Revenue Ser vice (IRS). The Tax-Aide program began in 1969 but since 1980 Tax-Aide has operated under a cooperative agreement with the IRS as part of its Tax Counseling for the Elderly pro gram. Together AARP and the IRS have developed the training program. Since the original five volunteers prepar^ the first 100 income tax returns in 1969, the program has grown steadily and is now AARP’s largest volunteer program. In 1984,18,000 volunteers helped prepare 1.3 million federal, state and local returns. In North Carolina alone, 19,000 tax returns were prepared at 150 centers. They were super vised by 2,400 volunteer coor dinators at 9,000 tax prepara tion centers. Every Wednesday, from Feb. 4 through Apr. 15, basic tax preparation services will be available for persons of all ages at the JCC from 2-7 p.m. Call Jane Abel, 366-5007, if you have questions concerning this service.
