By Milly Goldstein
Last December I received an
invitation from the Senate and
the Lord Mayor of the city of
Fulda, Germany, my birth
place, to take part in the
dedication of my former
Jewish school. All travel and
accommodations were handled
and paid for by the city.
This school, which I attended
as a child, had been completely
rebuilt and renovated by the
city. They planned to use it as
a Jewish Cultural Center and
a memorial of the Holocaust.
It will also serve as a place of
prayer for the small commu
nity of Jewish people now liv
ing in Fulda and surrounding
cities. There is a District Rab
bi, who travels £u-ound among
them.
I thought for quite a while
and at first did not want to go,
since it would bring back too
many bad memories. But since
my two brothers were going
(one brother from Long
Branch, NJ and the other from
Manchester, England), I finally
decided to accept the invita
tion and join them. My
daughter came along with me.
We arrived at the Frankfurt
airport and were greeted by
the Mayor and members of the
city government, as well as
television cameras and
reporters from the local
newspaper. Then we boarded a
bus for the IV2 hour trip to
Fulda and to our hotel. There
were approximately 330 peo
ple from five different con
tinents arriving for this occa
sion, and the buses were run-

chartered buses had a nurse on
hand, as well as travel guides.
They finally got the group
settled in eleven different
hotels.
Since most of the people
were strictly kosher, ^1 the
meals were catered and
brought in to the various
hotels daily.
The committee had a busy
agenda planned for us. We had
programs every day and night,
including a city tour, a bus trip
to the Rhone mountains, a
banquets every evening. All of
these functions were attended
by the Mayor and the City
Council. At the first night’s
get-together the Mayor
greeted us with a beautiful
speech. I met many of my
former classmates and best
friends, whom I had not seen
for almost 50 years. There
were tears, hugging and joy,
and a lot of talking.
The highlight was the dedi
cation of the school. Rabbi
Levy from Israel, a Cantor
from New York and the Dis
trict Rabbi over Fulda, led the
outside service. It was a very
moving service especially as
the mezuza was nailed to the
doorway and the kaddish re
cited. At the conclusion of the
dedication we went inside the
school. I visited my former
classroom and found my first
grade class picture in a photo
album.
Security was very tight at
all the functions and they also
had Red Cross nurses on hand.
On Friday night, we attended
a service at the new cultural
center, followed by a beautiful
Shabbat dinner. The dinner
took place at a hotel which was
within walking distance, since
many of the people would not
ride a bus on Shabbat. For this
dinner, the candles were lit.
